A man was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash near Walkersville late Wednesday, according to a Maryland State Police news release.
The crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. when a Jeep driven by Charles Olson III, 19, of Frederick was turning right from Stauffer Road on to southbound Md. 194.
Police said Olson accelerated rapidly from the intersection and lost control on the wet road, causing the Jeep to travel in the path of a Nissan Maxima that was heading north on Md. 194. Olson’s Jeep was hit on the right front and overturned, throwing him from the vehicle. Police said Olson was apparently not wearing a seatbelt.
Olson was taken by ambulance to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries police described as life-threatening. Olson is in serious but stable condition this morning, Shock Trauma spokeswoman Cindy Rivers said.
The driver of the Maxima, Katie Norwood, 26, of Keymar, and a passenger in Olson’s Jeep, Christian Atontsa, 20, of Frederick, were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
The road was closed for about an hour while the crash was being investigated. Police said the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against Olson.
