Should Jeep build the `Old Man Truck’?

Jeep calls its retro-look J12 concept vehicle the “Old Man (fishing) Truck.” It features a chromed “harmonica grille,” round headlamps and “pipe lights,” and chromed metal bumpers. (Tim Spell)

Simplicity and utility have been key ingredients in Jeep design for years. Since die-hard fans clamor for basic Jeep cool, the company continues to be creative in building new Jeep versions with old-school styling.

At a recent Chrysler press event, showcasing its latest products, there was a sterling example of how Jeep creates fresh vehicles that borrow from traditional design. Standing out among a huge collection of new vehicles is a bright-red, retro-looking Jeep pickup, wearing “J12” badging with old-style lettering. It summons visions of a vehicle I’ve seen before, but was unsure where. After some head scratching, I turned to Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, for answers.

It’s a concept vehicle, Allen said, inspired by last year’s New Kaiser pickup concept, which was based on the Kaiser Jeep M715 military vehicle used during the Vietnam War era.

The J12 concept truck is “unmistakably Jeep,” but has a front-end look that hasn’t been around since the 1960s. (Tim Spell)

“When we did the New Kaiser, that worked,” Allen said, “so we wanted to do more of a civilian version. “This one we coded the OMT, which was the `Old Man Truck’ — we built an old-man’s fishing truck.”

The “J12” designation comes from the early Jeep trucks, which were designated J10 or J20, depending on weight class. Since the concept pickup was made for the 2012 model year, it was tagged “J12.”

Built from a Wrangler Unlimited four-door, the J12 wears a full-6-foot-long cargo box. In order to mount a spare tire underneath, the box had to be extended back and the muffler moved over. The roof, which is from a Mopar pickup kit, was shortened and its window removed to accommodate the 6-foot box.

Up front, Allen’s team didn’t go with the traditional seven-slot Jeep grille, but with a chromed “harmonica grille.” The look, he said, is “unmistakably Jeep. It’s another face that we own. Everybody seems to recognize that front end. It hasn’t been around since the ’60s. The front end was last on the J10 trucks.”

Round headlamps were a must, Allen said, and they’re teamed with chromed “pipe lights,” which were used on old trucks. Pipe lights were fitted on low-cost trucks in the early ‘60s in an attempt to add an upscale look.

“Chrome bumpers, they had to be part of the package,” he said, “not a plastic bumper, but a real chrome metal bumper.”

Stretched on the same wheelbase as a Wranger Unlimited are white steel wheels with chrome hub caps, wrapped with bias-ply tires. (Tim Spell0

The hood and the fenders are carbon-fiber replicas of Jeep’s original Gladiator from the early 1960s. The old-school design treatment also includes a windshield visor, which was called a “brow” on early trucks.

Looking at the J12’s profile, Allen said, “it just proportions out well. It looks natural — a white steel wheel with a chrome hub cap and a skinny bias-ply tire (900-16LT). It had to be — anything else would have been irresponsible.”

Powering the retro tires is Jeep’s new, more-potent 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, which delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s mated with a five-speed automatic transmission. Making it off-road capable, the J12 is equipped with heavy-duty Dyna front and rear axles, and Tru-Lok push-button electronic remote front and rear axle locking.

“It’s as capable as a Rubicon,” Allen said. “It works well. We had it out in Moab (Utah) and we weren’t kind to it.”

Inside, the basic-looking fishing-truck theme continues. A tall shifter sprouts from the floor with a round black knob topped with what Allen calls a “highly inaccurate bubble compass.” This compass definitely is for effect, he said, because the vehicle is fitted with a navigation unit.

The stock Wrangler seats were recrafted into a bench seat, metal surfaces were painted body color and the carpet was replaced with rubber flooring. Finishing off the back is a rack, which holds a fly-fishing rod.

“We focused the J12 toward Walter Matthau,” Allen said, “but the kids really dig it.”

Gordon’s small, red two-door has good some-more than 2 million miles on a odometer, a homogeneous of scarcely 1,176 times opposite a globe.

The late schoolteacher from Long Island hopes to strech a 3 million mile symbol by subsequent year. He usually has 34,000 miles to go.

The 72-year-old Gordon drives his Volvo everywhere. He has reason a Guinness World Records symbol for High Mileage Vehicle given 2002 and was a initial chairman to reason that record.

“It’s usually a automobile we suffer driving,” he said.

He bought his dear automobile on Jun 30, 1966, for $4,150 during a age of 25. “It was a whole year’s salary,” he said.

Gordon creatively wanted a automobile Volvo with atmosphere conditioning, yet it was too expensive. He paid additional to have an AM/FM radio, though.

“It was $10 extra, and during that time, $10 was a lot. But an AM/FM radio was a large deal,” he said.

Gordon’s automobile has usually adequate room for him and his essentials. His front fender is filled with pins of his mileage achievements. Even his permit image says “MILNMILER.” And his case overflows with a many automobile tools he thinks he competence need when on a road.

“I have a set of everything,” he said. “If we have it, afterwards we am not going to need it.”

Gordon has been holding highway trips given he was a child and continued by his adult years. He says he would usually tell his family to container their things and strike a road. Gordon’s dual daughters went on his highway trips until they outgrew a little red car.

“They usually couldn’t fit in a behind anymore. That is when we bought a hire wagon,” he explained. “Volvo, of course.”

His odometer doesn’t have adequate digits to arrangement a tangible mileage, yet Gordon has tune-up annals verifying it.

Now divorced, Gordon takes highway trips alone. With trips to Montreal, Texas and Michigan in usually a final month, a final leg of his outing should not be too hard. It took him 21 years to strech a initial million miles and 15 some-more years to strech 2 million. Gordon averages 85,000 to 100,000 miles per year. Most of his trips are for automobile shows, yet he also takes trips opposite a nation usually for a good crater of coffee.

“I have had coffee in each state,” Gordon said. “I am my possess transport channel.”

The zealous motorist believes in holding caring of his car, and he doesn’t let anyone else expostulate it.

“That’s since we bought my girls their possess cars,” he said.

Jordan Weine is a automechanic during Bay Diagnostic, an automobile emporium formed in Brooklyn and a Volvo expert. He says since Gordon takes caring of his car, he is means to get high mileage but many change to a car’s strange mechanics. The automobile still has a strange engine, yet it was rebuilt twice in a car’s lifetime.

“How high does a redwood grow? If it is not messed with, it will grow,” pronounced Weine, who hasn’t worked on Gordon’s car. “And there are really few redwood trees and a same goes with this. There are really few people that can grasp 3 million miles.”

It is transparent that Gordon loves his automobile and he can’t suppose removing absolved of it.

“Why would we wish to get absolved of it?” he asked. “Kind of like a good woman.”

Gordon’s automobile has brought him fame. Joe Brusack, a automechanic who worked on his automobile when it was on a millionth mile some-more than 20 years ago, pronounced it’s come a prolonged way.

“I consider it was usually extraordinary that he got this far,” he said.

Gordon himself is astounded each time he gets into his automobile and edges closer to his 3 million mile goal. But a miles have taken a fee on a car. Recently, some black connect got into a car’s carburetor. He has to get that bound before he can strike a highway again.

Volvo has sent Gordon to trips around a nation and a universe to paint Volvo in automobile shows.

“I don’t consider (just) any automobile could do it,” pronounced John Maloney, boss and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. “It is a multiple of a automobile dear by his owners that has gotten Irv to this mileage.”

Gordon thinks that his Volvo will final approach longer than 3 million miles.

“I have a feeling I’ll be passed prolonged before a car.”

Boat, automobile dealers wish bills reassessing sales taxation transport well

Greg Krueger has listened it from his clients many times: They’d like to squeeze their new vessel from his Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales, though they’re instead going opposite a Michigan border.

That’s since many other states, including Michigan’s Great Lakes neighbors, cruise sales taxation usually on a disproportion in value between a new vessel or automobile and a trade-in. It can be a poignant squeeze consideration. And for years, it has been a rival waste that Michigan vessel and automobile dealers, lawmakers and other interests have sought to change.

Now, with bills recently relocating to alleviate a impact on state income , advocates are optimistic.

“We have support in a Senate, and we cruise we have support in a House,” pronounced Krueger, boss and owners of a St. Clair Shores vessel dealership. “It’s going to boost all a dealers’ business.”

In May, a Senate by a near-unanimous opinion upheld a check that would cruise sales taxation usually on a disproportion in value. A likewise purposed House check in Jun changed out of cabinet and is on a floor.

It’s an emanate that for years in a state Capitol has had far-reaching support among Democrats and Republicans, and one chronicle of a legislation done it into law for a brief time in 1984 before it was repealed.

Over a years, income impact has been a arch concern.

“I don’t cruise anyone ever argues a policy. It’s always a money,” pronounced Terry Burns, executive clamp boss of a Michigan Auto Dealers Association in East Lansing. “And that’s what creates these sole bills interesting, since they proviso it in.”

Senate Bills 126 and 127, sponsored by Sen. Dave Robertson, R-Grand Blanc, would start this year by exempting from taxation a initial $2,500 in a disproportion between a new automobile squeeze and a trade-in. The volume would arise by $2,500 any year by 2017, and afterwards in 2018 all a disproportion in value would be free from sales tax.

House Bill 5696, sponsored by Rep. Andrea LaFontaine, R-Richmond, would in 2012 free a initial $7,500 of disproportion in value from taxation and afterwards would free an additional $2,500 any year for a subsequent dual years, with a change totally adopted in 2015.

Under both bills, a change for vessel purchases would be full and immediate.

But while a Michigan Department of Treasury sees phasing in a sales taxation change as an alleviation over past versions of a legislation, a Snyder administration is against to a bills in their stream form.

According to a Senate Fiscal Agency analysis, a changes as due in SB 126 and 127 would revoke state sales and use taxation income by $12.8 million in a remaining stream mercantile year, with income impact rising to $90.9 million in mercantile 2013 and reaching $221 million in mercantile 2018 when a sales-tax change is entirely phased in.

Treasury estimates a impact of HB 5696 to be $151 million in mercantile 2013 and $179 million in mercantile 2014. No estimates were accessible for 2015.

“The mercantile impact is a concern, and we are now focused on reforming a personal skill taxation complement in a administration’s stability bid to urge a state’s business environment,” pronounced Terry Stanton, Treasury open information officer, in an email to Crain’s.

Bill sponsors contend they are supportive to state budgetary concerns though wish to yield taxation service to consumers as good as residence a competitiveness emanate for businesses.

“I cruise that this is prolonged overdue,” pronounced Robertson, who sponsored and co-sponsored identical bills in a past.

“I don’t trust that a impact will be as serious as a bill’s opponents would argue. But we do trust that a taxation service would be poignant for a purchaser, and from a integrity standpoint, a dismissal of double taxation.”

He pronounced a change would kindle automobile and watercraft sales and pierce in new taxation revenue, and there would be rebate altogether state income impact than a Senate Fiscal research suggests.

LaFontaine pronounced she is “open to any negotiations and unequivocally what will pierce this check forward. Because we demeanour during this as a advantage for a taxpayer.

“The state can demeanour during it as a detriment of revenue, though if you’re putting income behind in a consumer’s pocket, that’s where that income should be going.”

Asked about a probability for aspects of a legislation to be revised to make it some-more excusable to Treasury, Stanton pronounced “the administration is always meddlesome in improving legislation.”

How shortly a bills pierce stays to be seen. House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, is meddlesome in a bills “as another form of taxation service for people in Michigan and a intensity matter to boost automobile and vessel sales.” However, there is “the matter of how to residence a rebate in income that would be caused,” pronounced his press secretary, Ari Adler, in an email.

“The state is doing improved now from a check standpoint than we have in many years. We wish to continue to kindle expansion in a economy, that an additional taxation cut could provide,” a email said.

“Having pronounced that, we also have a shortcoming to cruise how such taxation cuts will impact destiny budgets. Because of a required examination that is still needed, we do not nonetheless have a timeline on when we will residence possibly of these dual taxation bills in a full House.”

Burns, of a automobile dealers association, pronounced a change would inspire some-more people to trade in vehicles that would be sole by protected new and used automobile dealers, with a state afterwards creation a full sales taxation income on those used-car sales.

And, he said, a assets satisfied could give all automobile buyers some-more income for a down remuneration or revoke a volume they need to finance, eventually creation it easier to squeeze a vehicle.

Among 45 states that have a ubiquitous statewide sales tax, Michigan is one of 6 to not give credit for trade-ins on a sales tax, check supporters said. The other states are Oklahoma, Virginia, Nevada, California and Maryland, Burns said.

Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales’ Krueger estimated a taxation change would boost his business’ sales by 20 percent to 30 percent. He pronounced Jefferson Beach sales were about $20 million in 2011 and are approaching to proceed $25 million this year.

John Ropp, boss of a Livonia-based Michigan Boating Industries Association, pronounced a legislation would make Michigan “substantially some-more competitive” for vessel dealers. “And being a boating state we are, to be a usually one in a Great Lakes segment (to cruise sales taxation on sum price), only doesn’t make any sense.”
