Money And Investing In China: Jeep, Beauty And Heart Illness

Consumer-related stocks have been a mixed bag at best for investors in China so far this year amid a decline in economic growth and tight monetary policy in the country. Yet for investors with a long-term point of view, the prospects for good returns among the group still good and recent declines may mark a good time to buy.

So says Gabriel Li, who the holder of degrees from Stanford, MIT and the University of California-Berkeley, who has picked a good share of winners in China over the years. When he was working for Carlyle years ago, he led the U.S. company’s investment in online travel company Ctrip, where he is still a vice chairman. Today, he is a managing director at Hong Kong-based Orchid Asia, which manages about $ 2 billion.

Among the shares that he owns and thinks will perform well over the long haul are China Outfitters, a retail fashion chain that is the licensee for Jeep in China; Tang Palace, a Chinese restaurant chain; Natural Beauty, a women’s beauty chain; Lifetech Scientific, a Chinese maker of small medical devices, and Basic Home, a Korea-listed home accessories store active in China. Li is also a long-term holder of U.S.-listed online education company, China Distance Learning.

China’s tight monetary policy has sent China shares and real estate prices broadly lower in the past year, but Li for one isn’t worried.  Tighter credit is “healthy” because an annual increase of more than 5% last year had started to lead to speculation or “phantom demand” that was distorting the underlying economy and leading to excess supplies.  “It is a good thing that things are slowing down,” he believes.  “There has a misallocation of resources at the societal level.”

The fuel for much of the money that found its way into real estate speculation is gradually diminishing, too:  big trade surpluses.  “Having too much of a trade surplus is no good” for China’s economy, Li believes.

Consumer spending, which grew at a double-digit pace in China last year are likely to remain healthy against a backdrop of continued economic growth and wage increases, Li believes.  To that end, Li is investing in shares that he expects will benefit from that spending flow.

One, Tang Palace, is little changed since listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange last year in April 2011 when it listed at HK$1.65 just ahead of a big global grow scare last autumn. It has rebound by two-thirds for its October 2011 low, and was trading at HK$1.67 yesterday, or a less-than-steep seven times expected 2012 earnings per share.  The company’s menu is more upmarket than Country Style Cooking,  a Chinese restaurant chain may be better known to international investors owing to its Nasdaq listing.  Tang Palace said this month it would partner with “PappaRich” of Malaysia to open restaurants in Hong Kong, China and Macau, adding  a cuisine that differs from its core offering.

In the apparel retail industry, Li owns a stake in China Outfitters, a company that had done well targeting men’s fashion and found success building up “Jeep” as a fashion brand in the company. Sales last year rose by more than a third to $198 million; net profit increased by more than half to $65 million. The stock is trading at a projected seven times 2012 earnings, according to Bloomberg figures. China Outfitter executive Zhang Yongli was a member of a list of 25 Influential Chinese in Global Fashion published last year by Forbes China, the licensed Chinese-language edition of Forbes.

Natural Beauty, whose shares also trade in Hong Kong, was a pioneer in the beauty salons and products years ago, but Li believes Orchid obtained its stock at a good entry point October during a market drop; it holds a 6% stake.   Bloomberg projects its 2012 price-earnings ratio to be about 15.   Also in the retail industry, Orchid owns shares in  South Korean-listed Basic Home, whose home accessories chain has found success in China.  Its shares have recently been trading at fairly steep 90 times projected 2012 earnings.

Li has had success with investments in healthcare-related industries in the past. In 2010, AGA Medical, a company Orchid backed, was acquired by St. Jude Medical for $1.3 billion. Today, Orchid and Li’s family trust have a combined 20% stake in Lifetech, a maker of catheters, plugs and other medical devices tied to heart disorders that went public last year in Hong Kong and whose shares have as much as doubled since.  Sales last year increased by more than a third to 140 million yuan, or $22 million; the stock is currently trading at a 2012 PE ratio of more than 30 times, Bloomberg says.

The dusty town of Moab, Utah, has a population of about 5,000 people. Every year for the past 46 years, beginning the week before Easter, the town swells to more than double that number for the Easter Jeep Safari.

Enthusiasts from all over the United States make the pilgrimage to test their mettle (and metal) by driving their Jeeps, trucks and other off-road vehicles on trails with such ominous names as Hell’s Revenge, Steel Bender and Poison Spider Mesa. The event is coordinated by Red Rock 4-Wheelers, which has been in charge of the Safari since 1983.

Things to pack for the nine-day off-road jubilee include extra food and water, sunblock, sunglasses, tools, extra fuel and layers of clothes. Many layers of clothes. This year’s event—held from March 31 to April 8—started with snow-covered mountains, temps in the 40s and cold, blowing rain. Altitude on the trails can vary wildly; just because it’s warm at desert level doesn’t mean it will be tolerable at the top of the trail.

Luckily, the sort of person who heads out to the Jeep Safari is the same sort who will lend you the shirt off his back. Off-roading is a group exercise. The first rule is to make sure you can see the vehicle in front of you and the one behind you. If you can’t, the group needs to tighten up.

Any beginner’s nerves quickly subside after the stranger in front steps out to help you pass safely, no matter how long it takes. If you break down on the rocks, seven guys will dismount with tools, spare parts and an encyclopedia’s worth of know-how to get you back on the road. Winches make fast friends.

As for equipment, you’ll want something with four-wheel drive, locking differentials and about nine inches of ground clearance. A stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon will get you almost anywhere you need to go, as long as the tires are big enough. Longer pickups and SUVs will have to go slower, but with a bit of care and a friendly guide, they can tackle more than half of the trails on the trip.

After Easter, Moab winds down a bit. The mecca of off-roading goes back to being a small town nestled between the Canyonlands and the Arches National Park. But on March 23 next year, the adventure will start all over again.

Mopar brings Jeep Muscle to Moab

Jeep brought five concepts to the Easter Jeep Safari, each one wilder than the last.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Concept

1. The Trailhawk improvements start with 18-inch Goodyear Silent Armor off-road tires wrapped around five-spoke alloy mineral gray wheels. Modified Mopar rock rails are added to each side. The Trailhawk is painted in stone white with mineral gray and red accents. Other touches include black headlight surrounds, standard badges in black and a red “Trailhawk” logo on the back.

Jeep J-12 Concept

2. The J-12 concept is an extended version of Mopar’s JK-8 pickup conversion kit. The rear frame of a 2012 Unlimited model was extended 18 inches, making the bed a full six feet in length. A Mopar three-inch suspension lift kit was added, with Teraflex sway bars controlling ARB air-locker-equipped Dynatrac D-44 and D-60 axle assemblies.

Jeep Mighty FC Concept

3. Easy now. Before you FC junkies get excited, Jeep isn’t offering this conversion kit for sale. The Mighty FC began life as a Rubicon model, before being chopped and screwed into the Forward Control. It uses Mopar’s new Portal Axle set, along with King coil-over assemblies and Teraflex control arms. Rock crawling is done with 40-inch tires mounted on Hutchinson bead-lock wheels.

Jeep Wrangler Traildozer Concept

4. For the toughest trails, Jeep brought the Traildozer in a color it calls Dozer Yellow. Jeep worked with American Expedition Vehicles on the 2012 Rubicon model, adding 37-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claw radials, a 3.5-inch suspension lift kit and F-1 leather seat trim. The Traildozer also gets the big Hemi and routes power through Dana 44 axles with 4:10 gears with electronic locking differentials.

Jeep Wrangler Apache

5. The Jeep Wrangler Apache delivers what enthusiasts have been clamoring for: a Hemi V8. But it’s not just any Hemi—it’s the 6.4-liter powerplant from the Dodge Challenger 392. Other performance parts include Mopar Pro axles, a 4.5-inch Stage 3 lift kit and bead-lock wheels. A Warn winch sits on flat-black fenders up front. The conversion kit will be available this summer.

Eco Etiquette: What’s The Latest On Eco-Friendly Air Travel?

Send all your eco-inquiries to Jennifer Grayson during eco.etiquette@gmail.com. Questions might be edited for length and clarity.

Has there been any swell per some-more eco-friendly atmosphere travel? It seems like there was speak for awhile about regulating biofuels, yet what’s a latest? we have to take a lot of flights this summer, and I’m feeling strong guilty about all those CO emissions.

-Sam

Forget a CO emissions for a second. With a news this week that airlines will start charging families additional to lay together, we might finally give adult on atmosphere transport altogether. we meant seriously, how many some-more nonsensical can all these surcharges get? If we have a choice, I’ll take my hybrid automobile and a widen of open highway and a case where we can toss in my bag yet carrying to things it initial in a carry-on sizer, appreciate we really much.

In a complicated world, though, many of us can’t totally equivocate flying. There are business trips (though telecommuting is finally apropos a some-more possibly option); can’t-miss finish weddings; and family in far-flung places. My hermit lives in Boston, and I’m substantially not going to set off from Los Angeles for a cross-country highway outing with my screaming toddler anytime soon.

So behind to those CO emissions: Until bio-based jet fuels turn not usually cost effective, yet truly tolerable (greenhouse gases compared with prolongation and food confidence issues have hampered progress), eco atmosphere transport will continue to be an oxymoron.

The good news is that a aviation attention is investing heavily in immature fuel research. In fact, we might have already flown on a French grill oil moody and not even famous it: To date, more than 1,500 newcomer flights have tested modernized biofuels.

Now, a bad news: Experts say some-more widespread use of plant-based fuels in blurb aircraft is still several years away. And it might take even longer than that, given Congress’s new preference to effectively anathema a troops from regulating biofuels.

The issue, during slightest superficially, is cost: The Republican-led House Armed Services Committee has commanded that a Defense Department can't squeeze choice fuels that are labelled aloft than “a normal hoary fuel.” (Though rather shamelessly, exemptions have been done for spark and healthy gas.) But a genuine cost here will be progress: The US troops has paved a approach for advances in a blurb aviation attention with a early adoption and contrast of biofuels. If these troops programs are no longer, who knows to what border a whole attention will be stymied?

Biofuels (sadly) aside, there are new craft designs that might offer some wish for a environment: Southwest Airline’s new cabin interior facilities recyclable carpet, as good as lighter seats done with eco-friendly materials. Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner uses lighter materials and a some-more aerodynamic pattern to grasp a 20 percent burst in fuel efficiency, yet you’ll have to locate it on a moody from Denver to Tokyo. In 2013.

So for now, if it’s a vacation you’re planning, we titillate we to initial cruise a informal highway outing around hybrid or rail over a far-flown locale. A family of 4 roving in a Prius from Los Angeles to San Francisco, for instance, will expend 50 kilograms of CO2 any way; fly that same family to Hawaii, however, and they’ll be adding 2.76 metric tons of CO2 to a atmosphere (note: these calculations embody radiative forcing).

And of course, there’s always a staycation, that some-more and some-more people seem to be holding these days interjection to a severe economy. we privately like camping in a backyard, yet we can find some-more fun ideas here.

If atmosphere transport is a must, we can relieve your environmental wingprint by selecting a nonstop moody (50 percent of a plane’s emissions start during takeoff and landing); make-up light (lighter craft = reduction fuel); and holding open transport to a airfield (I’ll take a JFK AirTrain over a cab in trade any day).

Then, make it your goal to tackle what rubbish we can while we travel. It might seem insignificant in light of all that CO you’re spewing, yet it does supplement up: Did we know, for instance, that 1 million cosmetic cups are used on US flights each 6 hours? We can do so many better, and all it takes is a small allege planning. Here’s what we take with me on each flight:

Reusable H2O bottle. More airports are adding water bottle refilling stations that allot filtered water, yet not all do; to be on a protected side, we container a Bobble reusable bottle with built-in filter.

Homemade snacks/meal. Airport/airplane food is heavily finished and heavily processed. we container copiousness of healthy food in a reusable lunch bag.

PeopleTowels. These reusable palm towels are a good choice to those groundless paper napkins on a flight.

Natural palm sanitizer. we don’t trust that temperate non-potable craft water. For a some-more consummate hand-washing, CleanWell sanitizer kills a germs yet a poisonous chemicals.

Borrowed book. I’m a fool for report mags on planes, yet my demur (and my brain) feels improved when we save trees and steal my reading element from a library instead.

Collapsible cup. Sometimes a rough moody warrants a cocktail. This collapsible immaculate steel cup serves one adult sans a disposable plastic.

I’d toast to safer and some-more tolerable summer travel, yet utterly honestly, I’m too vexed about a Republican pull to finish troops biofuel research. Call your representative!

Car buyers should import options of switch to electric

If you’re deliberation a new automobile purchase, an electric automobile competence be estimable of consideration. While a suspicion of never visiting a gas hire again appeals, cruise some things before holding a plunge.

An electric automobile can be an ideal choice if your daily pushing needs are modest. According to studies finished by General Motors, on average, many Americans expostulate fewer than 40 miles a day.

Now cruise that, according to a EPA, a Nissan Leaf has a operation of 73 miles before it needs recharging and a Mitsubishi i goes 62 miles before a battery container is drained. The Chevrolet Volt — an extended operation electric automobile — travels 35 miles before a gas engine kicks in to assign a battery for a subsequent 250 miles.

Beyond a weekend outing, cruise where and when we can block your electric automobile in. Do we have a place to recharge during your office, or are we going to have to wait until we get home? Given that, a Chevrolet Volt would be a improved resolution if it’s your usually car. Most days, you’d never bake gas. For other drivers, a Leaf or an i would make a ideal daily second car.

All of a cars in this story are recharged by plugging them into an electric outlet. Recharging times change depending on a stretch of a car’s battery container and how many of a appetite is depleted.

All electric cars can be recharged regulating a required 120-volt electrical outlet, also famous as Level One charging. But it can take as prolonged as 20 hours to entirely recharge a depleted battery.

Most electric vehicles can be recharged faster regulating a 240-volt outlet, a arrange used for an electric garments dryer. Usually, this requires that your garage or carport be connected for a 240-volt opening and a use of special chargers. This is famous as Level Two charging.

The Nissan Leaf, that can take adult to 20 hours to recharge during Level One, takes 8 hours during Level Two.

Also cruise if we can recharge your automobile while during work and what arrange of horse is available.

And finally, remember that a vehicle’s battery stretch creates a disproportion in charging time. While a Leaf takes 8 hours to recharge during 240 volts, a Chevrolet Volt, with a significantly smaller battery pack, recharges in 5 hours during 240.

Test expostulate reveals differences

An electric automobile might seem identical to a required car, though a differences start a notation we strike a starter button.

Start it up, and there’s no sound or shudder. Lights come on, though we feel and hear nothing. There is a delivery push or knob, though no purchase pedal. It’s not needed; a automobile uses a invariably non-static involuntary transmission. There are no bound gears. Since electric motors miss engine braking, there’s a apart rigging to assistance delayed a car.

There is no tachometer display engine speed. Instead, a sign shows a commission of remaining charge. Another readout shows stretch remaining until sum battery discharge.

Usually, EVs have a normal pushing mode and an eco mode, that restricts acceleration to preserve battery charge. The expostulate line of these cars shuts off when stopped for a light, though accessories such as radios, meridian control and wipers still function.

Acceleration is discerning off a line. Unlike gas engines, where appetite builds adult gradually, electric appetite comes on instantly, like flipping a light switch. However, pushing aggressively fast depletes battery power. Weather, ambient heat and appendage bucket (climate control, audio complement use) can impact range.

All electric cars use regenerative braking, that captures appetite from braking to assistance recharge a car’s batteries. As a result, a brakes squeeze fast and a cars decelerate quicker.

On a car’s exterior, you’ll find an electric assign pier in place of an opening to gas up.

Just like some gas cars transport over on a gallon of gas, some electric cars go over off a kilowatt-hour of electricity. The Mitsubishi i is a many efficient, regulating 0.3 kWh/mile or a homogeneous of 112 mpg, according to a EPA. The Leaf rates 0.34 kWh/mile or 99 mpg-e, while a Volt measures 0.36 kWh/mile or 94 mpg-e.

Comparing a costs

Electric vehicles, such as a Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i, and gas-electric variety cost some-more than your standard vehicle. The Leaf starts during $35,200, a i during $29,125 and a Volt during $39,145. All of them are authorised for a $7,500 sovereign taxation credit.

Assuming 11,000 miles of pushing annually — or 30 miles a day — a Leaf motorist would save $1,180 a year in Hampton Roads; a i driver, $1,210, according to UCS analysis. This assumes a gas cost of $3.50 a gallon.

According to an research by a Society of Automotive Engineers, Chevrolet Volt drivers use electricity for 64 percent of their travel. Assuming that, you’d save $857 annually, presumption a reward gas cost of $3.70.

There’s one some-more cost to consider: battery replacement. According to Consumer Reports, a Volt’s batteries are estimated to cost $8,000, a Leaf’s approximately $18,000. Thankfully, both EVs have 8-year/100,000-mile warranties on their battery packs and associated components.

Safari Wilderness is Not Your Typical Zoo

The group is amazed as a less-than-a-day-old baby springbok begins walking around with its parents. Soon the crowd becomes nervous as a waterbuck begins to stalk the newborn. The waterbuck isn’t a carnivore, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t attack.

After a few minutes of suspense, the baby springbok is back under the close eye of its parents, and the truck drives on a little farther, finding a group of ostrich.

These people are not in Africa; they are here in Lakeland.

“I’m going to tell people there’s a safari in Lakeland,” said Helen Chan of Lakeland.

Safari Wilderness is a wildlife ranch in North Lakeland, where people can see animals from Africa, Asia and the Americas displaying their natural characteristics in wide open spaces. Patrons set up tours, where they can see close to 300 animals from 35 species up close throughout the 260-acre property.

“It’s a much nicer experience than going to a concrete, steel zoo,” said Rudy Abel of Lakeland.

From the moment guests get out of their cars, they know this is not a typical zoo. Guests park their cars next to a corral of zebras prancing around in a full herd.

The only way to see Safari Wilderness is to reserve a spot on one of four daily tours.

The tours take about two hours, and guests will get to see several animals up close and get to feed some, such as the Asian water buffaloes.

Tours have a limited number of spaces because of county regulations. As a result, the tour is more intimate, with guests able to ask questions more casually with the tour guides.

“We want it to be a free exchange,” said staff veterinarian David Murphy, who also acts as a tour guide. “We get a wide variety of people, some of these people are experts in their own field, that they can add to the discussion. That’s what we’re interested in. We’re telling our story, but it’s not monopolistic or a one-sided story. We want a dialogue.”

Murphy, who has 25 years of experience working with exotic animals, used to work at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa.

Safari Wilderness was born from the idea that zoos do a great job of educating people about animals but don’t do that well with herding animals, Murphy said.

“The animals (at Safari Wilderness) are given more space and kept in natural grouping and natural arrangements so they can express all that natural behavior that they’re born with,” Murphy said.

Guests can also reserve tours or ride on camels and a horse-drawn carriage.

One of the popular attractions is feeding the lemurs. People can enter an enclosed area and feed grapes to the primates. The enclosed area has five fully grown lemurs and one baby lemur.

During feeding time, the lemurs will use their hands to pull your hand closer to their mouths.

“Oh I loved it,” said Mary Rembert of Orlando. “The mom and the babies are sitting right there. It’s a wild animal. and it’s putting its hand on your hand. There’s nothing like it.”

Murphy said Safari Wilderness, which is accredited by the Zoological Association of America, is on the cutting edge of agritourism, and he thinks other zoos will catch on.

Guests like Scott Jacobs, who drove with his wife Karey Jacobs and daughter Nicole Jacobs from Seminole, could tell that Safari Wilderness is on to something.

“They’re really taking care of the exotic animals, and it’s better than a zoo,” Scott Jacobs said in sign language. “They’re much happier animals.”

Remanufactured Engines from Ford, Chevy, Jeep and Dodge Now Dyno Tested at RemanufacturedEnginesforSale.com

Remanufactured engines seller, http://www.remanufacturedenginesforsale.com, is now dyno testing Ford, Chevy, Jeep and Dodge engines before they are offered for sale. This new two-step computer controlled testing is designed to improve the quality of in stock rebuilt engines put into a pickup truck, car or SUV.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) May 20, 2012

Remanufactured engines are reproduced engines from used Ford, Chevy, Dodge or Jeep engines and sold as a replacement engine. These types of engines are mostly sold as an upgrade to a standard used engine. Few engine sellers make investments into expensive testing equipment to prove the accuracy of a rebuild and often go by the expertise of an engine mechanic. The engine retailer, http://www.remanufacturedenginesforsale.com, has purchased a new dynamometer machine to computer and compression test every rebuilt engine from its engine shop. This expensive but useful device will make it much easier to determine oil compression ratios that help validate the success of a remanufactured engine project. All remanufactured engines from Ford, Chevy, Dodge and Jeep will now be tested using this equipment before these engines are shipped to fulfill customer orders.

Automotive dealerships traditionally stock larger inventories in the summer months to take advantage of manufacturer discounts and special dealer incentive pricing. Much of the growth that is reported annually by GM, Ford and Toyota happens between the second and third quarters. These increases in automotive sales often mean a higher increase in engine replacements and project car building. “We recently received huge Ford and Chevrolet shipments to prepare for the summer,” said Miles Hartmann, Sales and Strategy Analyst for RemanufacturedEnginesforSale.com. “This expansion of our inventory and new dyno testing is expected to work out very well for us and our customers,” Hartmann added. The average car that is purchased brand new, according to market research studies, has an estimated life span of 5 to 7 years.

These automobiles are either traded in at dealerships or sold at used car auctions. The condition of used engines can often vary from poor to excellent depending on the maintenance provided by a previous owner. This puts increased value on testing engines before they are purchased by salvage yards, dealerships, mechanics or individual vehicle owners. The American Remanufactured Engines Association recommends that used engines receive service well before the 50,000-mile mark. The rebuilding facility that http://www.remanufacturedenginesforsale.com has constructed is now able to bring used engines to life with both expert mechanic testing and dyno testing for every engine in its growing inventory. The quality of a professionally rebuilt engine could be able to give a driver another 50,000 miles of uninterrupted drivability.
