Road Trip I

For roughly dual years, we have banged divided during a large centralized IT plan called a Court Case Management System, a wicked bureaucracy’s badly recognised and badly run boondoggle. To see it punch a dirt final month left me with an dull feeling, like, what do we do now.
     So we strike a road.
It was not until we left a business that we satisfied how most we indispensable to get divided and cover some country. The timing was perfect. A outrageous deluge had engulfed most of a state for dual days.
In a wake, a earth seemed to be in celebration mode, with immature entrance into a hills and a pacific fever soaking over a dripping land. Spring was on a way.
The shun from a business was billed as a business trip. we entertainment adult to Santa Cruz to accommodate a San Francisco business arch and a Santa Cruz reporter, who is also a unison violinist. From there, we worked out approach down a coast.
My uncle Bill, who we am named after, used to transport this way, labyrinth along a coast, interlude here and there, and spending a night in whatever motel happened to demeanour good as a day wore on.
My initial wander was to stop during Moss Landing, a small little brook south of Santa Cruz that is home to dual sea investigate laboratories. The Shakespeare store was sealed temporarily. The renter had left a note observant he would be behind shortly.
There was nary a traveller in a roughly dual block blocks along a sea that make adult a landing. we stopped by a Haute Enchilada to get a dish and a beer.
The square is in a garden that if we had a time would be my garden. Exotic cacti, succulents and flowers. The garden is dotted with art, a Frida Kahlo paintings, a prolonged porcelain wall in a figure of a immature dragon, and a fountain hold aloft by full and bare-breasted Aztec maiden.
The chowder we systematic reminded me of a approach we used to prepare it on a beach after clamming, with bacon, potatoes as good as corn, onions and bell pepper, in a gas enriched with divert (and not corn syrup). The carnita tacos were excellent, and a Big Sur ale went down well-spoken and easy.
The square was dull and pacific on a balmy day.
But a time was a’tickin’. So we headed south along a seashore along a coast. All a places that were famous in girl swung into perspective and out, a Nepenthe Restaurant, a campgrounds underneath a redwoods. The seashore was fantastic though familiar, as good as a delayed pokes perpetually negligence down a drive.
What struck me some-more this time was a precariousness of a road, during times cut out of a stone face, and a magnitude of correct sites where pieces of a highway had evidently cleared divided into a sea below.
As a loyal tourist, we stopped fast to see a cluster of elephant seals during Ano Nuevo, a state park nearby San Simeon, and afterwards jumped behind in a automobile to, during last, strike some open highway on a expostulate into Paso Robles.
I have never been to Ireland though a hills along highway 46, joining coastal highway 1 to internal highway 101, reminded me of a descriptions.
In a soft, gray light of entertainment dusk, a hills, large though kindly dull by time, were all a deepest green, stretching divided as distant as we could see. Groves of ash stood along a ridges and hilltops, surrounded by expanses of new grass.
I sped along a road, perplexing to make it time for cooking in Paso Robles where a business arch was already ensconced with a pint of Guinness. And done it in time for a excellent cooking of rabbit cassoulet and a bottle of Everett Ridge pinot, well-spoken as silk.
All of it was so far, such an huge stretch in experience, from an business and a computer, and so gratifying to a lust that had built adult over a months, a wanting not distinct a land’s lust for a sleet that had brought it behind to life.

Cut transport costs with giveaway gas

This post comes from Kelli B. Grant at partner site SmartMoney.

Travelers might find it easier to bill for summer highway trips this year: Not usually are gas prices falling, yet many hotels are charity to fill adult a tank.

Image: Filling fuel tank (Â Corbis)Hotels mostly offer giveaway gas cards with a few nights’ stay when gas prices are on a rise. Many properties put their latest deals in place this open when a inhabitant normal for a gallon of unchanging unleaded was hovering tighten to $4 — and some-more drivers were pledging to stay home.

For example, Riviera Palm Springs Resort Spa in Palm Springs, Calif., offers a $50 gas label during check in by May 31, while a Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau awards a $25 label with a two-night stay during name properties any time before Sept. 30.

But over a past month alone, gas prices have forsaken 18 cents, to an normal $3.73, according to AAA. “The understanding will go even serve now,” says Gregg Laskoski, comparison petroleum researcher for GasBuddy.com. “That label is going to give drivers some-more value in a tank.”

Unfortunately those gas cards won’t get we utterly as distant on a West Coast, where gas prices have been rising instead of falling. In Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska, gas prices are above $4, and experts envision they’ll boost further. Regular gas prices operation from $4.215 in Oregon to $4.487 in Alaska, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.

More holiday weekend drivers this year

Still, these offers could be value a demeanour if you’re among a scarcely 31 million Americans AAA says devise to strike a highway over Memorial Day weekend this year. The series of people awaiting to expostulate is adult 1.2%, and represents 88% of all holiday-weekend travelers.

Most are formulation to stay tighten to home, however — AAA reports a normal outing will be 642 miles, 150 fewer than final year. Laskoski says that’s approaching since some areas are still saying towering gas prices. “There’s a extensive event for destinations to constraint a internal expostulate marketplace by charity gas cards,” he says.

Travelers should still review rates and offers before booking. Many of a deals need a set series of nights, and some mention that usually certain nights of a week are eligible.

Dutchies View BB in Woolwine, Va., promises a $25 gas label for a three-day stay or a $50 one for 4 nights. “A seven-day stay fills your whole tank,” says innkeeper Patrick Powells.

Most need travelers to compensate a full-room rate, that might make other sales or packages a improved deal. A special banking or formula might also be indispensable to explain a offer before check-in. For example, during participating Marriott resorts in Canada, engagement with formula TRS means “your automobile will stay and eat free” — any weekend night stay gets giveaway on-site parking and a $25 gas card.

Experts contend that even yet prices are approaching to keep dropping over a subsequent few weeks in many states, consumers might continue to see new free-gas deals cocktail adult via a summer transport season. “We’re expecting some-more offers,” says Rich Rodriguez, a orator for BnBFinder.com. “Gas prices have come down, yet they’re still high.”

Already, he says, innkeepers on a site have posted roughly twice as many offers as this time final year. Some of a hotel deals now in play also have extensive death dates. The Wyndham Tampa Westshore‘s offer of a $50 gas label with a two-night stay goes by Dec. 31.

Guided fell tour to put walkers in Wordsworth’s shoes

A LITERARY tour across the fells has been launched to help put walkers into William Wordsworth’s shoes.

University academic Prof Simon Bainbridge has designed a walking safari through the landscape which inspired England’s most famous Romantic writing.

It is hoped the picturesque 3.5 mile route, around Grasmere and Rydal, will allow amateur walkers and families to experience literature outside of the boundary of the library and the classroom.

Prof Bainbridge, at lecturer at Lancaster University’s English and Creative Writing Department, organised the tour in collaboration with the Wordsworth Trust. It will see groups trace the paths
graced by Wordsworth, around 200 years ago, and step directly into some of the most famous scenes in British poetry.

Prof Bainbridge said: “I’ve been walking in the lakes since I was a teenager, which was roughly the same time I developed an interest in Wordsworth.

“He was a great poet of the outdoors who loved walking and felt that the natural landscape of the Lake District was a tremendously positive influence on our sense of well being and our development.

“One of the key points in this walk will be Loughrigg Terrace – which describes Wordsworth’s account of first seeing Grasmere from Red Bank and having the image of the perfect place.”

The tour fits with principles laid down in Wordsworth’s 1798 poem ‘The Tables Turned’. In it he told readers ‘Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher’.

The first of several walks, led by Prof Bainbridge, will be held next Tuesday, May 22, from 10am – 1pm and from 2pm – 5pm. They start at Stock Lane car park, in Grasmere, and cost £10, £5 for
concessions.

The media debate afterwards changed to Cars Land, where we enjoyed that stunnin view, afterwards were ushered into Flo’s V8 Cafe. Sporting new costumes, Flo’s V8 Cafe expel presented us samples of Red’s Apple Freeze on a approach to a list seats. Red’s Apple Freeze is one of those “Better for You” drinks that will be charity during a Cozy Cone Motel. It is 100% Apple Juice with tip flavorings and a Passion Fruit Foam. The splash has no fat and is 190 calories per 16 oz serving.

Director of Food and Beverage for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Michele Gendreau discussed many of a new food equipment and their credentials stories as they grown a menu for Cars Land. Guiding beliefs in formulation a Cars Land menu was to not transcribe equipment found elsewhere in Disney Califonia Adventure, though rather, to offer food that people routinely demeanour outward a park to get.

To start their research, Gendreau and her culinary organisation spent a three-day, 17-stops debate of Route 66 to get a season for a forms of food to benefaction during Cars Land. “What we see in that ’50s–’60s time duration is unequivocally many alive today,” Gendreau said. “Route 66 is such a fanciful enlightenment and time duration that is not wasted.” They found many Route 66 landmarks, including a Midpoint Cafe in Texas, still in existance, and Gendreau pronounced such finds supposing good inspiration,

Rotisserie Entrees prominence a Flo’s V8 Cafe menu. Photo by Karl Buiter,

Within Flo’s V8 Cafe are 4 rotisseries. Named “Spit Fire Rotisseries,” these use a kitchen record of a 1960s. Some representation menu equipment we competence design when a cafeteria opens includes.

  • Rotisserie Turkey Breast – cooking in citrus over crushed potatoes, with a spirit of citrus in a gravy,
  • Rotisserie Pork Loin Slices – with Coca-Cola BBQ salsa with mole.
  • Veggie Tater Casserole – a shepherd’s pie-inspired object that has been well-received. This plate contains a soy-vegetable bottom Boca crumbles, bulgur wheat, and roasted vegetables surfaced with crushed potatoes and melted cheddar cheese. Gendreau was unequivocally unapproachable of this offering.
  • Veggie Baked Beans – a salsa had a same seasoning bottom as a Coca-Cola BBQ sauce, though a Coca-Cola element..

Gendreau remarkable that no cooking should be finish though a divert shake. Flo’s skeleton to offer 3 classical flavors—chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Each would be surfaced with “Road Gravel” (chocolate and strawberry curls) and churned cream.

Veggie-Tater-Casserole and Milkshakes to be sole during Flo’s V8 Cafe. Photo by Karl Buiter.

According to Gendreau, there is some-more to Flo’s story: She was a Motorama Girl, a Cars singing organisation of a time. The Motorama Girls enclosed such members as Laverne “Va Va Vroom,” Flo “She’s Fin-tastic,” Shiela “What a Cream Puff,” and Rhonda “Sassy and Classy.” Several of a Motorama Girl’s albums accoutre one of a rooms, including a classical “Jeep Date.” So when Flo staid in a city of Radiator Springs, she combined her “Pie-o-Rama.” Michelle discussed a impulse for these desserts opening from diners like The Midpoint Cafe, where nauseous membrane pies can be found. Michele remarkable it was utterly a attainment to get their French Disney Pastry Chef Jean-Marc Viallet to emanate nauseous desserts, though he found success with 4 flavors: Apple Cheddar, Chocolate Mud Pie, Blueberry-Peach, and Strawberry-Rhubarb.

The of a many surprising equipment to arrive during a Disney Park will be served during a Cozy Cone Motel. The Chili “Cone” Quesa is formed on one of a pivotal equipment of a time period—the Frito cake (a elementary plate that consists of chili criminal carne served over Fritos corn chips still in a strange bag).

The Chili “Cone” Quesa uses an succulent cone done from a product with a same structure as Pretzel Bread. Disney has been study this product for 3 years, and while a cone element is not disdainful to Disney, this will be a initial time a product will be accessible to a public. Within a cone is chili surfaced with Fritos corn chips. Disney skeleton to offer variations, including a breakfast chronicle with scrambled eggs and cheddar eheese.

Continuing a cone theme, a Cozy Cone Motel will also offer “Frozen Conecoctions” with pomegranate-limeade and lemonade flavors, cones with churro bites with cinnamin-chocolate sauce, soft-serve chocolate-and-vanilla-swirl ice cream cones, and flavored PopCones (popcorn with special season seasoning bases). During a media event, they charity a dill pickle-flavored chronicle during a tour.

Disney California Adventure is in for a vital facelift on Jun 15 that is distant some-more than only a new captivate or two. Perhaps, for a initial time, Disney California Adventure will finally come to a possess as a full-day park, no longer a shade of a comparison next-door sibling. The subsequent several weeks should be sparkling for both a Disneyland Resort and a larger Disney community.

Do we devise on fasten a stupidity this June? You can gamble MousePlanet will be there!

Micato Safaris Commemorates 25th Anniversary of AmericaShare Non-Profit

Micato Safaris Commemorates 25th Anniversary of AmericaShare Non-Profit with Expanded Commitment to Changing African Lives

New York, New York (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Luxury safari operator Micato Safaris is known thoughout the industry for many “firsts.” It was the first tour operator to hire only local guides in the countries in which it operates. The first to do away with any and all tipping on its tours. And, yes, the first tour operator to address AIDS in Kenya—specifically its effects on the residents of Nairobi’s Mukuru slum.

Micato is proud to announce that 2012 marks the 25th Anniversary of Micato-AmericaShare, the non-profit organization founded by Micato. Micato-AmericaShare is dedicated to improving the lives of impoverished women and children living in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi—people who have been made even more vulnerable by the HIV/AIDS pandemic—by providing educational and economic opportunities to those who need it most.

To commemorate this long-standing and sustainable effort, Micato is expanding upon its highly successful One for One Commitment. Through One for One, Micato Safaris pays the fees required to send an African child to school—a child who would otherwise stay home due to extreme poverty— for every traveler they take on safari. This initiative began in 2010 and was inspired by TOMS Shoes’ One for One initiative, which gives a new pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased.

Now, in honor of Micato-AmericaShare’s 25th Anniversary, for every safari Micato sells, it will also:

  • Donate one book to a library built by Micato-AmericaShare in the heart of Mukuru.

  • Donate one Huru (“Freedom”) Kit to provide Kenyan girls with desperately needed sanitary supplies so they can stay in school during their periods.
  • Donate one tree to the Nairobi Greenline Project.
  • Donate one gallon of water to Mukuru for every gallon used by our travellers.

“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and getting to the root of the problem was the goal when we founded Micato-AmericaShare,” says Lorna Macleod, executive director of AmericaShare, “To know that the children who were sponsored in the early years of our program are now graduating from college and improving their lives brings us joy and inspires us to reach more children. With the help of our travellers, we grow closer each day to achieving our goals of empowerment, education and a brighter future for all.”

Here are just a few of Micato-AmericaShare’s life-changing initiatives:

School Sponsorship Programme: Micato matches orphans and vulnerable children—many of whom have lost one or both parents to the HIV/AIDS pandemic—with generous Micato travellers who sponsor the children to attend boarding school, for the duration of their high school years and sometimes into university.

Lend a Helping Hand on Safari: Virtually every Micato itinerary in East Africa includes a visit to Micato-AmericaShare’s Harambee Community Centre, where travellers are introduced to the shocking reality of the slum. During their visit local staff speak to travellers about the School Sponsorship Programme. By the end of the visit, many are inspired to sponsor a child.

The Micato-AmericaShare Harambee Community Centre: Recognizing the need for a headquarters for Micato’s charitable work as well as a multi-purpose facility for impoverished residents of Nairobi’s Mukuru slum, Micato-AmericaShare built the Harambee Community Centre in 2007 in the heart of Mukuru. The Harambee Centre serves thousands of Mukuru residents, offering day-to-day and long-term resources.

Key Harambee Centre Resources Include:

  • Computers for playing “Pamoja Mtaani”—Swahili for “Together in the Hood”—an educational video game developed by Warner Bros. for a PEPFAR-supported program designed to keep young people safe from HIV infection.
  • A library offering services to the Mukuru community six days a week.
  • A bore hole, drilled by Micato-AmericaShare, providing a plentiful supply of precious fresh water to the Harambee Centre as well as all Mukuru residents.
  • A basketball court along with spectator benches, built in part through the largesse of young Micato travellers using funds they received or raised at their bar mitzvahs.
  • A base for Huru International, founded in 2008 by AmericaShare executive director Lorna Macleod. Huru manufactures reusable sanitary pads that have thus far been distributed to more than 20,000 school girls, enabling them to attend school throughout their menstrual period.

“We treat our service work like we treat our guests, with focus and careful attention,” says Dennis Pinto, managing director of Micato Safaris. He adds that, “After being a part of the luxury travel industry for many years, we’ve learned that the key to lasting success is to find what you do best, and do it with all of your heart.”

About Micato Safaris

Micato Safaris is a luxury safari operator—offering adventures in East Africa, Southern Africa and India—that’s been setting the industry standard for luxury and service for more than three decades. Travellers have recognized Micato’s unsurpassed service by naming the company the #1 World’s Best Tour Operator Safari Outfitter” a record eight times in Travel + Leisure’s prestigious annual survey. Micato’s accolades from industry peers include the Conde Nast Traveler World Savers Award. For a quarter century, Micato’s nonprofit arm, AmericaShare, has been supporting orphaned and vulnerable children and adults affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Micato furthered its philanthropic outreach in 2010 when the company introduced its revolutionary One for One Commitment, which places one impoverished child in school for every safari sold.

L.A. accounts for about 10% of a EV Project’s residential participants. As of Mar 31, 422 Nissan Leaf drivers, including a author of this article, were providing information about their pushing habits. The 9 Chevrolet Volt owners who sealed adult for a EV Project in L.A. were not enclosed since Ecotality requires 10 vehicles to total pushing data.

Based on L.A. information for a initial entertain of 2012, Leaf drivers assign divided from home 24% of a time, contra 19% nationally. They transport about 28.1 miles between charges contra 27.4 miles nationally and arrive during home with some-more depleted charges than EV drivers in other cities.

“That seems to prove a larger certainty in their cars’ operation and in anticipating charging locations divided from their homes,” pronounced Ecotality orator Steve Schey.

L.A. also shows “an change of time-of-use rates,” he said. Participants in a L.A. Department of Water and Power EV module accept a rate bonus of 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour if they assign their vehicles on weekends and between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. weekdays.

According to Schey: “We see a burst in charging during 8 p.m. and additional peaks during 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 11 p.m. and midnight, so people are programming their units to assign during a off-peak time.”

Ecotality started collecting information in Dec 2010, after Chevrolet and Nissan introduced their Volt and Leaf electric vehicles, and will continue to collect information by a finish of 2013.
