The Governor General says the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme’s (JEEP) will be moving into higher gear.

According to Sir Patrick, already 5,000 people have received jobs under JEEP and the programme is continuing to focus on short term employment.

Additionally, Sir Patrick said under JEEP there will also be jobs related to agricultural activities such as honey production, banana/plantain resuscitation, low-income housing construction and work-based training.

The JEEP is a campaign promise from the Portia Simpson Miller-led Government.

Following a number of hiccups, the employment vehicle started in March and is expected to extend to all parishes.

Desire to help others comes from Africa

At first glance, Dr. Bob Yancey, an orthopedic surgeon at Harbor Orthopedic Clinic in Gig Harbor, and Tanzania’s Lucas Mhina, a tour guide in the central East African nation, might seem like an unlikely pair.

Mhina recently paid a five-day visit to the Pacific Northwest, and he stayed with Yancey in Gig Harbor.

The two first met when Mhina served as a tour guide for Yancey and his family on a 10-day Tanzanian safari. Mhina planned a custom trip to three game parks where Yancey and his party were treated to an adventure that included close encounters with area wildlife, as well as insights into the area’s culture, history and tradition.

“We felt very fortunate to be personally referred to Lucas from friends in the USA, and we did not book through an international intermediary,” Yancey wrote in a testimonial posted on Carnival Safaris’ website dated Sept. 7, 2011. “I knew immediately that we were working with a special person when Lucas personally responded to my emails from the middle of the Serengeti.”

That kind of attention to customer service is something Mhina has honed during his 14 years as a safari guide. Four years ago, he struck out on his own as the founder, tour leader and facilitator of Carnival Safaris based in Arusha, Tanzania, the heart of Northern Tanzania National Parks.

“He’s more than a safari guide,” said Yancey, who regularly travels around the world and uses his medical skills to help those in need.

He added that Mhina became part of his safari family.

“It’s like a world of connections,” Yancey said.

“It goes well,” said Mhina, who has a master’s degree in tourism and hospitality management from East London University in the United Kingdom, as well as a diploma in wildlife management and safari guiding from the South African Training School, a well-respected institution for training safari leaders and guides.

Word of mouth helps to promote his business, he said, and it was one of the reasons for his trip to Gig Harbor.

“It’s pretty neat to see a lot of people exploring Tanzania because of that,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing.”

Another reason for his trip to The Maritime City and the Pacific Northwest was to get the word out about Friends of Meali International, Inc., an organization established in 2009 to support Tanzanian children by improving their education, primarily through the Meali Primary School.

Located between the City of Arusha and the popular tourist safari destination Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the school has about 350 students who range from kindergarteners to seventh-graders, and it’s served by seven teachers.

Children there face hardships such as a lack of paved roads, electricity and school buses. Paper and pencils are a luxury. Many families can’t afford the required school uniforms, and food is scarce — hardly an environment conducive to learning.

Mhina, who sits on the organization’s board of directors, has leveraged his safari clients to help out at the school.

“My clients want to help all of Tanzania, but they started with the school,” he said. “They’ve been doing a great job with that school.”

In fact, Friends of Meali International already has helped to produce an increase in the proportion of students who qualify to go on to secondary schools, from just less than half in 2007 to 92 percent last year.

Future plans call for providing financial aid in the form of scholarships, Mhina said. In addition, there are plans for more improvements at Meali, including new and renovated classrooms and new and larger latrine facilities. Long-term plans include expanding efforts to other nearby schools.

“People want to help people,” Mhina said. “Almost all of them (schools) need help.”

Yancey agreed: “For me, it’s not so much vacationing all the time; it’s like work with some play. It’s a hard place to work.”

It’s not all work, however, as the men got a chance to take a little time off during Mhina’s visit to Gig Harbor.

“Wow, what can I say?” Lucas said of his most recent excursion to America, where he noted the plethora of goods and services Americans enjoy.

“We’re pretty comfortable here,” Yancey said.

Mhina also got a chance to experience some weather he’s not used to in Tanzania, which is in the midst of a four-year drought.

During his time in Washington state, Mhina witnessed the region’s signature overcast skies and precipitation, although there were some sunny spring days to enjoy as well.

Mhina joked he brought the sunshine with him, and he planned to take it back when he returned to Tanzania.

A trip to Olympic National Park’s Hurricane Ridge gave Mhina a chance to see lots of snow, as in 11 feet of the white stuff.

“He didn’t want to climb Mount Rainier,” Yancey quipped.

Another plus for Mhina: A ferry trip to Seattle to visit the Space Needle.

“That was very, very nice,” said Mhina, who likes to travel around the world but admits it can be “a hit in the pocket.”

Taking the Red Jacket Jeep for a spin: Autoweek TV

Also in this episode: BMW opens up the M Performance Parts catalog for the 3-seres and 5-series sedans, Toyota plans to crank up its North American factories and a safety supplier touts the addition of a two-point seatbelt.

TRANSCRIPT

– BMW opens up the M parts catalog for 3- and 5-series owners.

– More Toyotas will be built in North America.

– A safety supplier promotes wearing an extra seatbelt.

– And we’ll give you a closer look at the Red Jacket Jeep from the Sons of Guns TV show.

I’m Ken, getting your week off to a fast start with a Monday edition of Autoweek TV. Here’s the news:

BMW has opened up its M Performance Parts catalog to the new 3- and 5-series.

The parts will let owners make upgrades to the chassis, brakes and exhaust for the 2012 3-series and the 2011 and 2012 5-series.

None of the parts will make your BMW go faster. But your car will look the part.

Automotive News reports that Toyota will slash the number of cars it imports from Japan.

The move scales back Toyota’s strategy of “bridge manufacturing,” where it builds cars such as the Camry here and in Japan. It uses imports to help meet sales demand.

But the current yen-dollar exchange rate makes Japan-built cars much less profitable here. So Toyota is gearing up its North American factories to meet demand here, and possibly export vehicles to other markets.

Auto-safety supplier Autoliv says car passengers can be even safer if they wear an extra seatbelt.

Autoliv has developed a two-point belt that is added on with the three-point seatbelt used today.

When you get in the car, you slide your shoulder under the two-point belt, then buckle the three-point belt. This gives you a setup similar to a five-point harness used by race drivers.

The belt is being launched on the two-seat Renault Twizzy electric car.

That’s our news for today.

Before you go, watch West Coast editor Mark Vaughn’s report on the Red Jacket Jeep. It kicks butt!

We’ll be back tomorrow. And remember–enjoy the drive.

Apple patches Safari, blocks outdated Flash Player

Yanks Flash plug-ins older than the November 2010 version from Safari browser

Apple on Wednesday patched four security vulnerabilities in Safari and blocked outdated versions of Adobe’s Flash Player from running in its browser.

The Flash blocking move was similar to one Apple made last month when it stopped the Java plug-in from launching automatically.

[ InfoWorld's Woody Leonhard says it's time to run Java out of town. | For tips and tools for managing an enterprise Mac fleet, download InfoWorld's free "Business Mac" Deep Dive PDF special report today. | See InfoWorld's slideshow tour of Mac OS X Lion's top 20 features and test your Apple smarts with our Apple IQ test: Round 2. | Keep up with key Apple technologies with the Technology: Apple newsletter. ]

Safari 5.1.7, which runs on OS X 10.6 and 10.7 — Snow Leopard and Lion, respectively — as well as on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, was released alongside another update for Lion that included a slightly-older version of the browser. Lion users must download and install both updates to push Safari to version 5.1.7.

The four security flaws fixed were the same ones patched Tuesday in iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. All were labeled as bugs in WebKit, the open-source rendering engine that powers Safari as well as Google’s Chrome.

In fact, one of the vulnerabilities was first revealed by a researcher at the “Pwnium” hacking contest Google hosted last March. The researcher, Sergey Glazunov, was awarded $60,000 for pairing the flaw with another bug to bring down Chrome.

Glazunov was credited by Apple with reporting a second WebKit vulnerability, while another was attributed to a pair of engineers on the Chrome security team.

Along with the four patches, Apple also yanked Adobe’s Flash Player from Safari if the plug-in was older than version 10.1.102.64, which released in November 2010. Since then, Adobe has shipped Flash Player 11 for the Mac. It has also continued to maintain the older version 10, which now stands at version 10.3.183.19.

“This update disables Adobe Flash Player if it is older than 10.1.102.64 by moving its files to a new directory,” Apple’s advisory stated Wednesday. “This update presents the option to install an updated version of Flash Player from the Adobe website.”

Apple stopped bundling Flash Player with OS X in the fall of 2010, but users have been free to download and install the plug-in on their own. Microsoft last distributed Flash with the nearly-11-year-old Windows XP. Neither Windows Vista or Windows 7 included a preinstalled version of Adobe’s software.

Chrysler takes risk on deluxe features in Dodge Dart

By Mark Phelan, USA TODAY and the Detroit Free Press

If the 2013 Dodge Dart succeeds — and based on its price, fuel economy and features, it should — some credit should go to a meeting that took place before the new compact sedan was even in development.

Early in 2010, Matt Liddane, who is now Dart vehicle line director, was scheduled to give new Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne a presentation on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, the first new vehicle the company would introduce under Marchionne’s leadership and Fiat control. Liddane figured he was also scheduled to get his butt kicked because of overspending to get the vehicle right. He thought he might get fired.

He made his presentation, told the new boss where and why he’d overspent — mostly to make the Grand Cherokee’s interior look and feel ritzy and inviting — and waited for the ax to fall. Another executive at the table began rattling off what features they could drop, where they could scrimp to get back on track.

“I know the numbers. We’ll take care of the numbers,” Marchionne said, raising a hand to cut off the recitation. “This vehicle needs to be 100% right. That comes first.” He went on to approve materials and features that were better than previous management would have considered. The Jeep Grand Cherokee went on to become the new Chrysler’s first hit.

We already knew Marchionne, who has degrees in law and accounting, knew how to drive a hard bargain:

The Dart, with plush materials and features you don’t usually see on compact sedans — a large touch screen and configurable gauge display, to name two — is the latest evidence that Marchionne knows not just what things cost, but also what they’re worth.

Dodge Dart is the first in a range of models that will go a long way toward determining whether Fiat and Chrysler succeed in the world’s most important auto markets: China and North America.

The Fiat Viaggio sedan is next in line. The roomy sedan shares most of its engineering with the Dart and is the key to Fiat’s Chinese expansion plan. Chinese buyers, like Americans, prefer sedans to the hatchbacks that are Fiat’s forte.

Chrysler design and engineering should make the Viaggio a better fit for China buyers than Fiat’s previous attempts. The Viaggio goes into production in China next month.

Closer to home, expect the Dart’s platform to underpin a new midsize sedan and Ford Escape-sized crossover SUV. Expect more vehicles to follow.

Over hill, over dale in a baby Jeep

By all accounts, it was supposed to be a great time to drive through a sun-draped Hudson River Valley along winding roads through the Catskills. It should have been a perfect time to put Hiroshima’s One World in the stereo hard drive, crank up the bass in the boom box built into the rear of the compact SUV and rock and roll all over the Hudson River Valley.

But the climate never got that memo.

So the spring road run came as the temperature dropped into the upper 30s, the wind bolted into the 40 mile per hour zone and the rain — which hadn’t been seen in these parts since January — came down with pent-up fury, causing somnolent streams to roll over their banks and cover the roadways and turn packed gravel and dirt roads into gravel and mudways.

In other words, it was a great time to be in a Jeep.

The 18-inch, wide track wheels rolled over water, dirt, mud and rocks with equal aplomb as the Jeep’s independent suspension and gas-charged shock absorbers smoothed out any changes in the road surface. And the Compass’ four-wheel drive and traction control meant that there was never a hint of loss of control, regardless of what the weather did.

The Compass is an interesting addition to the Jeep family of on- and off-road vehicles. It is much smaller than the boxy, rugged-looking, go-anywhere Jeep Wrangler, but offers a lot in terms of comfort instead of off-road driving capabilities. It is still a Jeep, however, and can roam through small streams — or large, deeper ones if you spring for the optional “Freedom Drive” off-road package — or get you through all sorts of unpleasant road conditions.

On the outside, the Compass stands just a shade over five feet tall and looks like a smaller version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with its same trademark, wide-toothed grill, extra-wide stance, sculpted sides, and flat, black, inset door handles.

Under the hood, the Compass has a modest 2.4-liter, four-cylinder aluminum engine producing a modest 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. That’s not going to turn the Compass into a race car like its 150-mile-an-hour big brother, the Grand Cherokee SRT-8. But it is more than enough power for a compact like this to stay ahead of traffic. And in locked four-wheel, low gear it is powerful enough to tow 1,000 pounds and pull the car through sucking mud or deep snow and roll easily up wet, bumpy, 30-degree slopes.

The Compass is primarily an all purpose car, good for a family or anyone with an active lifestyle who wants enough room to haul either stuff or friends. In that category it competes with the Kia Sportage, GMC Terrain, and Hyundai’s Santa Fe and Tucson. It has also been pulling motorists out of small cars like the Toyota Corolla, who are looking for a low-cost vehicle in the $25,000 range with the space associated with an SUV.

Chrysler put a lot of thought into the interior of the Jeep, which has no hard surfaces. The seats are thickly padded, double-stitched leather. The front seats are manually operated, but fully adjustable and heated. The rear seats are also mobile, and can be slid forward several inches so the back can recline enough for a comfortable nap.

There is also enough leg and headroom for four average basketball players. The doors are also padded so you don’t come away from a bumpy, off-road trek with an armful of bruises.

For entertainment, the Compass comes with a Boston Acoustic sound system with nine speakers, including a hinged pair built into the trunk door, which can swing down and out to provide more than enough sound for the average block party.

There is a 40-gigabyte hard drive to collect a few thousand of your favorite jams, as well as Sirius satellite radio and connections for a USB drive, iPod, or MP3 player. There is a CD player and Bluetooth — the latter will let you play music directly from your Smartphone.

As a thoughtful addition, the Compass has a 115-volt outlet with a standard electric plug — which is great for running a game or powering a laptop — in addition to the standard 12-volt power port used to recharge phones. There is also soft lighting embedded in the cup holders, making them easy to find in the dark.

On an off note, the Compass — and the entire Jeep line — offer a Garmin navigation system with a built in, 7-inch color screen. Garmin has its admirers and its quirks. If you set the system at 200 feet so street names are legible on the screen, the Garmin will abruptly change to a setting a half mile or more shortly after you enter a highway.

The longer view may be fine in general on a highway, but it is too long to be able to navigate a complex exit interchange. Spokesmen for Garmin said in a statement that the automatic zoom feature is intended to save the driver the trouble of adjusting the map. They did not explain why they felt the built-in robot should tell the driver what settings to use instead of the other way around.

Garmin can also retrace previous trips with a feature called “bread crumbs.” That might be fine for keeping tabs on what the teenage driver in your house was really doing last night. But it does seem a bit creepy and begs the question of why the robot is keeping tabs on the driver and where that information is going?

Chrysler might want to reconsider installing a smart system that could become an expert witness in messy family court proceedings. Or the automaker could give buyers an option on the types of navigation systems sold. Chrysler’s Fiats use the Tom-Tom system which, like Garmin, was originally designed as a hand-held unit, while the Chrysler and Dodge lines use more traditional, technologically flexible, satellite-based navigation systems designed just for cars.

Jim Morrison, director of Jeep product marketing, said “the Garmin is a lower cost navigation system for us. The one in the Compass costs $685. There is a premium system, the traditional kind rather than the Garmin, but it costs $465 more and is available with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“The customers for the Compass and Jeep Patriot are more tuned into affordability and don’t typically get a fully loaded car, so we only offer the Garmin for those vehicles.”

But that’s a minor complaint about a go-anywhere vehicle that should go far in an evolving, small car market.
