Jessie Ronhock Missing: New York Authorities Search For 21-Year-Old Student

Authorities in upstate New York are searching for a college student who disappeared under mysterious circumstances last month.

Jessica “Jessie” Ronhock, a 21-year-old nursing major at Elmira College in upstate New York, was one day into her second term of her junior year when she suddenly left her on-campus apartment on Jan. 10. According to Sgt. Scott Packard of the Elmira City Police Department, Ronhock told her roommate there was a “family emergency” and she had to return home to Mashpee, Mass.

Roughly one week later, Ronhock’s parents contacted their daughter’s roommate to check on her. They said they last spoke with their daughter on Jan. 12, that they knew nothing of any emergency, and that they were unaware their daughter had left college, police said. They also said it was out of character for their daughter not to be in regular contact with family and friends, police said.

Ronhock’s parents reported her missing to police on Jan. 19. Authorities have since discovered that her 2000 white Jeep Cherokee is also missing.

“We’re doing anything we can to help the police. We’ve given them access to her room and her computer, any network share stuff that we have on our hard drivers in terms of electronic communications. We’ve interviewed and talked to all the folks from the ROTC…because she’s an ROTC student,” Mike Rogers, an Elmira College spokesman, told WETM-TV.

Authorities have confirmed Ronhock was at a KOA campground in Chattahoochee, Fla., from Jan. 12 to Jan. 14. Credit card records place her in Baytown, Texas, on Jan. 15 and in Williams, Ariz., on Jan. 16. She used her credit card in Cameron and Kayenta, Ariz., on Jan. 18.

“There’s been nothing since the 18th,” Packard told The Huffington Post. “We have followed up on a couple dead leads and unconfirmed sightings.”

According to police, Ronhock’s family received a private journal from her on Jan. 22 that was mailed from Williams, Ariz., which is roughly 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon. “Writings in the journal were of a disheartening nature,” reads a press release from Deputy Chief Robert Smallcomb.

“She had some things going on, but to say that she was suicidal — most suicidal people won’t go to the effort to travel across the country,” Packard said. “But the suspicion [has arisen] with the sudden drop off in credit card activity, no sightings and no contact.”

Packard said there is also a possibility that Ronhock, while on some sort of self-discovery trip, could have met with foul play.

“It’s definitely a possibility in this case — [that] she went out there to clear her head and gather herself and something’s happened since then,” Packard said.

Meanwhile, Ronhock’s friends and family members have created a Facebook campaign to help locate her. They are encouraging members to share information and pass out downloadable fliers. As of Monday, nearly 500 people had joined the “Find Jessie Ronhock” group.

Ronhock is described as a white female, 5 feet 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo of a rose on her left (some reports say right) shoulder and a butterfly tattoo on her right hip.

Authorities have described Ronhock’s vehicle as a white Jeep Cherokee, with Massachusetts license plate 66JX98. There are numerous bumper stickers on the back of the vehicle and a sticker on the upper center of the tailgate that reads, “MASSHOLE.”

Anyone with information about Ronhock’s whereabouts is asked to call City of Elmira Police at 607-737-5610

Varadero lives up to its reputation for beauty and hospitality

Cuba is renowned as one of the most colourful and compelling holiday destinations in the Caribbean. The island nation boasts a wealth of stunning colonial architecture, a fascinating history, roads filled with brightly restored vintage vehicles, sizzling music and unforgettable beaches.

If you decide to experience one of Cuba’s best beaches, Varadero may well be your destination. This 20-kilometre stretch of sand is the number-one tourist destination in Cuba.

Many travellers have dubbed Varadero the world’s most beautiful beach. One stroll along the flour-soft sand demonstrates why.

The water sparkles in shades of blue and turquoise. Tropical breezes keep the temperature sitting at a comfortable average of 24 to 26 C year-round. Palm trees provide ambience and shade. And walking barefoot along the white sand is infinitely more appealing than trudging through wintry streets in snow boots.

The extensive development in Varadero is quite a change from its early days in the 1500s, when the centre was little more than a dry dock for shipping out product from its salt mines to the Spanish.

In 1887, however, Varadero gained status as a city. Ten families were given permission to build vacation homes on the site.

When the earliest tourists came to Varadero in the 1870s, it was seen as a playground for the elite. A swishy club and an annual rowing regatta were created. American millionaires began popping by for visits and by the early 1930s, some were building mansions on this paradise of a peninsula. Gangster Al Capone was among the visitors.

The Cuban Revolution changed much of that beginning in 1959. The government took many estate homes away from the wealthy and encouraged Cubans from all socio-economic classes to visit Varadero. They even created free changing areas and bathing suit rentals for families of modest means.

But there was another major change to come. Economic upheaval around the world, including the break-up of the Soviet Union and plummeting sugar prices, began creating financial hardship in the country. Cuba had long relied on sugar production and friendly Soviet markets and supporters for survival.

The government began looking for a solution to its revenue woes and found one in tourism.

Dozens of new hotels and resorts went up up in Varadero in the 1990s, and Cuba began wooing Canadian and European tourists.

With a general travel ban to Cuba still in effect for Americans, Canadians eventually came to comprise almost half of the country’s two million or so visitors each year. (Europeans and Latin Americans largely account for the rest.)

There is much in Cuba that makes a Canadian feel welcome. Canadian flags flutter in the breeze at many hotels. Alberta beef is featured on the menus of finer restaurants. The country even hosts a Terry Fox Run to aid cancer research.

More than half a million visitors arrive annually in Varadero alone these days, and hotel rooms number more than 17,000.

Not surprisingly, many of visitors’ favourite activities revolve around the ocean: scuba diving, snorkelling, deep-sea fishing and yachting are all popular.

If you do want to tear yourself away from the beach, there’s no shortage of activities. Try a Jet Ski, horseback or Jeep tour. Or visit a restored fortress, a military museum, a vibrant wetlands area or underground cavern system.

One of coolest caving experiences is at the Santa Catalina Cave, where you can explore more than eight kilometres of passageways. Evidence of ancient societies have been uncovered here. At Ambrosio Cave more than 70 pictographs have been preserved.

Visitors looking for even more history can enjoy the historical and cultural attractions in nearby Cardenas and Matanzas.

And there’s always Havana. A day trip to the capital quickly reveals the unique appeal of an unforgettable centre.

Streetscapes featuring the grand architecture from centuries past is punctuated by the bright reds, greens and blues of residents’ laundry on clothes lines. A stroll through the famous Hotel Nacional is a must, as is stopping for one of Cuba’s best-known drinks – the mojito – in the lobby bar.

You can walk in the footsteps of the great American writer Ernest Hemingway, who was a long-time fan and resident of Cuba. Pop into La Bodeguita Del Medio, where the author was rumoured to hoist the occasional mojito or daiquiri, and sip a cool cocktail.

The streets of Havana are filled with an amazing array of Chevys, Pontiacs and Buicks from the 1950s. Until the American trade embargo, Cuba was a large importer of these vehicles. When the country was told residents could no longer buy American cars, Cubans decided they were going to make the ones they already had last and last.

The fact these vehicles are still running 50 years later is a testament to the wizardry of Cuban mechanics.

“It’s magic that they still run, one cab driver laughed, during a recent visit.

Magic doesn’t only apply to the vintage vehicles. It seems to infuse the island, from the people and politics to the shorelines and scenery. It’s something that makes a visit to Varadero unforgettable.

The 'human safari' is an outrage to tribal feelings | Observer editorial

As the world has grown smaller while our passion for novelty has expanded, our curiosity about different cultures, particularly those relatively untouched by what we deem “civilisation”, has grown exponentially. We come, we see and then we overrun wherever it is we have alighted.

The latest manifestation of our thirst for novelty as well as authenticity is causing some alarm – the “human safari”. These are organised by unethical tour operators who exploit tribes in India, Central and South America and other corners of the globe who have hitherto had little contact with the outside world. The price paid for this type of tourism has been vividly described by Gethin Chamberlain in these pages over the past few weeks.

His reports on the Bonda tribe in the hilly regions of the state of Orissa in India and the Jarawa in the Andaman Islands, in the Bay of Bengal, have triggered a huge response from readers of the Observer. The degrading manner in which the tribal people are bullied into dancing for the amusement of convoys of visitors, and members of the police who have a responsibility to protect these people from exploitation, is further illustrated by video evidence on the Observer‘s website today.

Stephen Corry of Survival International, which campaigns on behalf of tribal people, rightly says: “Tribes are not cultural relics nor should they be treated like animals in a zoo… promoting tours by using derogatory terms such as ‘primitive’ and advertising their nakedness shows a clear lack of respect.”

The national government of India apparently agrees. Recently, it has acted swiftly. Three tour operators have been charged with selling tribal tours “in an obscene manner”. Two men face up to seven years in jail if convicted. Laws already exist to safeguard both tribes.

However, it is the failure in the application of such measures that is at issue. In 2002, the supreme court of India, for example, ordered that the Andaman trunk road that runs through the Jarawa tribal reserve should be closed. The ruling has been ignored.

The closure of the road would give choice back to the Jarawa as to how and when they wish to engage – or not – with the outside world. Stricter regulation of the tour operators working in both regions and the disciplining of rogue police would also set a valuable benchmark. However, this is not solely India’s problem.

More than a billion tourists will be on the move across the world this year. International travellers and the tour operators that serve them also have a part to play. Some operators behave highly ethically protecting and strengthening indigenous communities. Others, however, are unrestrained in the ways they choose to satiate the fast-growing appetite for experiential adventures.

So where do we go from here? What is required, perhaps, is stricter regulations that cross national borders; tourists encouraged to become better informed and a much wider debate about what unethical tourism does both to fragile societies and those who pay to become spectators in the humiliation and decline of these tribal people.
