Holiday travel: Just remember, it could be worse…

I’m unequivocally blissful we came opposite this article about Arizona State University
student Lauren Elizabeth Weinberg, who spent 9 days stranded in
a Toyota Corolla, subsisting on sleet and candy bars, until she was
found by Forest Service employees.

Now we can put my possess holiday transport snafus in perspective.
Because I’m certain that something will go badly in the
process of drifting from Philadelphia to Chicago tomorrow.

I’m articulate about delays/cancellations, packed cabins and
rude passengers. Not a unthinkable.

It’s always good to have a small bit of viewpoint this time
of year. We all get bogged down in minutia when we should be
looking during a bigger design and counting a blessings.

One of a blessings I’m counting this year, again, after
reading that article, is that we traded in my Corolla for a
four-wheel-drive pickup truck. If we find me out in a wilderness
munching on candy bars and celebration melted snow, it won’t be
because my automobile got stranded on a road.

It competence be since my family gathering me crazy. But all this
perspective I’ve gained should assistance me equivocate any major
freak-outs. Let’s hope.

IDF: Eilat residents face terror threat

Residents of Israel‘s
southernmost city, Eilat, are facing a persistent terror threat from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, the IDF’s spokesman warned Monday.

Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai confirmed that construction of the Egypt
border security fence was halted earlier Monday at three sites as result of concrete terror warnings.
He added that he cannot say that Eilat residents can rest easy at this time. “Saying something like that would be irresponsible,” the army spokesman told Ynet.

Related stories on Ynetnews:

Addressing the threat from the Sinai, Mordechai said: “Sinai has turned into a no-man’s land; Palestinian and global terrorism found a convenient region there for setting up terror infrastructures. For this reason, unfortunately I cannot promise (that there will be no attacks.”)

The army refers to the Egyptian peninsula as “a region where one can trade in terror attacks,” the IDF
spokesman said. “We are facing many warnings on our Western border, but I can promise Eilat residents that the IDF is focusing the maximal efforts and forces in order to protect the sector.”

‘No reason to fear’

Brigadier-General Mordechai said that Eilat residents have no reason to fear, but should be alert and follow the IDF’s instructions regarding travel on area roads. He added that at this time the army has not declared the highest level of alert in the region.

Referring to the construction of the border fence, Mordechai said: “Once in a while, when we have a warning for a certain section, we freeze the construction and hold a situation assessment. However, the construction momentum continues…out of the 400 people working on the fence simultaneously, only 30 people stopped working.”

The IDF spokesman added that the army’s chief of staff is receiving regular reports about the constructing pace and has set December 12th, 2012 as the target date for completing the project.

South Africa is more than wildlife

Not mentioning wildlife in an Africa travelogue is a way to invite some ire but hey, this isn’t a brochure anyway .

Point is, if you’ve had your share of animal sanctuary outings in India, spotting some more value-additions such as zebras or giraffes shouldn’t be the ‘only’ agenda of your Africa trip. Yes, the ‘big five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo – appear intriguing if gaped at from a jeep (though the spotted cat almost never lets you see itself) but there is much more that we first-world-loving Indian travellers can explore in more civilised parts of southern Africa. Did you, for instance, know…

That there is a European hangover here
Having been colonised by the Dutch and British in the past, South Africa today bears a quiet hangover of it. Nearly half its cities have Dutch names (Johannesburg, Bloemfontein et al) while Cape Town, which has hitherto served as the interim port for European ships to Asia, flaunts distinctive Amsterdam-esque architecture. Thanks to the rainbow nation’s fine weather and a historic location on the ‘wine route’, it’s a proud producer of wines too. Also, its cities’ palates are unmissably European, so finding an Irish bar or a French-styled cafe won’t take too much of your time. In fact, the locals themselves head to Montecasino of Jo’burg for an authentic Italian experience.

That Cape Town leaves you sleepless
Arguably the most vibrant harbour city in the world, Cape Town is sure to catch your day time attention with its history (Robben island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), its picturesque vineyard drives and of course the Table mountain, SA’s contender for the New Seven Wonders. However, stay up and you’ll find that its nightlife appetite is enormous. Dozens of pubs and lounges on Long Street throb with revelers from across the world and the alcohol, coffee and an uber-friendly vibe keep flowing till sunrise. For best results, begin on a Friday night and pub-hop your way to glory till Sunday morning!

That you can be a gold-digger for a day
A city formed thanks to a gold-rush in the 1880s, Johannesburg still considers mining as serious business and it is at one of its significant mines – the Gold Reef City that visitors can get a feel of being a miner. The theme park’s gold mine tour takes you several metres down a shaft into a dark, humid gold mine, and gives you a crash course on the risky business of extracting yellow life out of an ore. In between adjusting the torch on your head-gear and gasping for breath, you will surely realise how fascinating the world beneath us is.

Though it’s easy to find dal fry, biryani or even jain food…
South Africa claims to be home to the largest Indian community outside the sub-continent and hence is also home to some good, bad and ugly Indian eateries at unexpected corners. Such as the expansive ‘Raj’ (which serves rubbish gulab-jamuns) right over a flashy casino in a Sun City hotel, or the impressive ‘Bhandaris’ (run by a South African!) en route a wine drive in Cape Town. That said, we’re yet to recover from the elaborate Jain food spread we encountered at a picturesque beach restaurant in Simon’s Town. Though we proceeded to gorge on the king clip (fish), this is good news for Gujjus and Marvaris, who reportedly love coming here.

You can always eat an ostrich/crocodile/zebra…
..and gather some stories for your grandchildren while doing so. ‘Game meat’, specifically hunted and delicately prepared, is a unique local treat you must try if your heart (and credit limit) allows. The common ones are ‘biltong’ (cured beef/ostrich meat, spiced and dried) and the spring buck (antelope). However, if you want adrenaline rushes at the dining table, try the smoked crocodile meat, charcoal-grilled zebra or the kudu (cute in the bushes but apparently delicious on your plate). While stuff such as ostrich membrane/knuckles is sold at malls, the wilder varieties are to be tried at restaurants such as ‘Carnivore’ in Jo’burg.

But won’t have the heart to touch the penguins here .
It may be called the jackass penguin owing to its bray but the African penguin at Boulders beach near Cape Town will still get the ‘aww’s going among your group. This colony of two-three feet long black-andwhite beauties is on a spectacular beach, and for those who thought such screen saver-like situations were experienced only in New Zealand, this is a sasta, sundar option.

That they love their beer… and cricket
As apparent from the stands in any cricket match in Centurion or Newlands, the South Africans love their golden brew as much as they love cricket. While many ‘shebeens’ (traditional taverns with smiling fat ‘mamas’ getting everyone drunk) have given away to plush bars, the locals continue to down ‘Castle’ and argue on their Smiths and Steyns. In fact, beer aficionados might consider it criminal to miss the exquisite audiovisual tour of the history of the drink and sample the world’s dishiest brews at SA Breweries’ ‘World of Beer’, the coolest museum of Jo’burg.

That safety and friendliness are under-rated
All this said, your father/in-law might still clamp down upon your South Africa itinerary for ‘safety’ reasons. But having been there twice and done things such as hailing a mini-van filled with African-Americans from an empty street post 11pm; asked a hundred strangers for directions and partied till dawn, this writer can vouch for the land’s safety and amiability. Yes, there are security concerns (GP can be Gauteng Province or Gangster Paradise!) but then being cautious was in every trip’s instruction list, right? Unless you insist on being stupid, you will be ‘sho-sho’ (all well).

More Americans to strike a highway this holiday, AAA predicts

Airlines for America, a U.S. airline industry’s trade group, is forecasting about 43.3 million atmosphere travelers during a 21 days surrounding Christmas and New Year‘s, a 1% dump from a same duration final year. It would be a smallest series of atmosphere travelers given a classification started collecting holiday representation information 7 years ago.

At a same time, about 83.6 million people devise to expostulate this Christmas and New Year’s, a 2.1% boost from final year, a automobile organisation AAA forecasts. If they do, it would be a second-highest volume in a past decade.

But a outing will cost some-more than a year ago. The normal for unchanging unleaded is $3.21 a gallon, 22 cents some-more than final year during this time, AAA says.

During Thanksgiving week, a rail service’s busiest transport duration of a year, ridership was adult 2.8% over 2010. Megabus, one of several bill train companies, is awaiting 25% to 35% some-more passengers than usual.

Getting around on a belligerent is a choice of many travelers who don’t wish to risk moody delays and cancellations, that run during a aloft rate over a Christmas and New Year’s holidays. They also contend they cite a leisure of pushing — picking their depart times and make-up what they’d like — even if it means trade with high fuel prices and traffic.

Last year, a snowstorm stranded Whitney and Justin Bride and their child in New England when they flew there to revisit family for a holidays. This year, with a second child and cousin in tow, they opted to expostulate 17 hours from their home in Denver to Houston. They spent $150 on gas one way, yet they figured it was still cheaper than airfare and a automobile let to get around Houston. They also got to container many toys for a kids, and even a fondle for their father — his guitar. “It was a good mangle this year to do something different,” Whitney Bride says.

Kristen Beat is pushing 8½ hours from Milwaukee to her family’s home in Omaha on Friday. She’s not disturbed about a cost of gas or traffic, yet she has been checking a five-day continue foresee regularly. She’s happy to equivocate an airfield this holiday.

“My presents are all wrapped and packaged in my case and we don’t need to worry about carry-on or checked container requirements,” she says. “I wish a expostulate were a bit faster … (but) all a some-more time to listen to Christmas music.”

Make certain that automobile is prepared for Christmas travel

After checking their Christmas lists twice, drivers should check
that their vehicles are in operative sequence before venturing out on
holiday trips.

You don’t wish to be one of 800,000 motorists around a country
that AAA predicts will need roadside rescue during a holidays.
That series includes 63,000 in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware
and surrounding states, pronounced AAA MidAtlantic mouthpiece Jenny
Robinson.

Nationally, AAA predicts 83.6 million people will transport during
the holiday period, that runs from Friday by Jan. 2. Of that
number, some-more than 1 million Philadelphia area residents will travel
50 miles or some-more from home, a 1.2 percent boost compared to last
year.

“Despite delayed mercantile liberation and high gas prices, some-more than
25 percent of Philadelphia area residents (a small some-more than 1
million) devise to transport during a arriving 11-day holiday travel
season,” Robinson said.

One reason might be a fact that gas prices, while still above $3
in many areas, have been dipping. The normal cost of a gallon of
unleaded is about $3.33, though prices as low as $2.99 a gallon have
been speckled in a region.

Still, AAA said, gasoline prices are a tip they’ve ever
been during Christmastime. During a initial 35 days of 2011, a
gallon of gasoline was hardly $3, according to Tom Kloza, arch oil
analyst for a Oil Price Information Service.

Putting gas in a tank isn’t a usually movement indispensable to keep a
vehicle using and AAA says drivers who aren’t on tip of
maintenance will need a agency’s assistance with battery replacements,
jump starts, tire changes, tows and other services.

“Becoming stranded on a alley can fast moderate your
holiday spirit,” Robinson said. “Whether we are formulation internal day
trips or prolonged distance, year-end holiday travel, carrying your
vehicle scrupulously confirmed and prepared for a rigors of holiday
driving will assistance safeguard it gets we to your end safely and
without incident.”

AAA says it expects to pill a automobile issues of some-more than
three out of each 5 stranded motorists and send them on their
way, though about 250,000 travelers national will need a draw during
the holidays, Robinson said. AAA also expects to open automobile doors to
get some-more than 104,000 sets of keys sealed inside vehicles, change
more than 95,000 tires and lift 38,000 vehicles out of a sleet –
among other services.

And while a roads will be crowded, PennDOT will assistance by
suspending upkeep and alleviation projects via the
Christmas period, pronounced PennDOT orator Charles Metzger. “We don’t
let contractors work over a holidays,” he said.
