Update: Northwest Iowa may get 3 to 6 inches of snow Saturday

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 1

Iowans in the metro area and across the state can expect rain on Saturday morning, and those in the northwest will likely see snow throughout the day.

Residents northwest of a line stretching from Fort Dodge to Mason City should expect between three to six inches of snowfall through the early evening on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines. The rest of the state will see mostly rain, and any snow accumulation should be less than one inch.

A chance of freezing rain exists on Friday night and early Saturday morning, especially for counties north of Highway 20. On Saturday, northern Iowa will experience temperatures in the high 30s, and the metro area should expect temperatures in the high 40s.

A winter weather advisory is in effect in northwestern Iowa for seven counties: O’Brien, Cherokee, Dickinson, Clay, Plymouth, Buena Vista, Woodbury and Ida, officials with the
Sioux Falls National Weather Service said.

Meteorologist Chris Jensen said a winter advisory is not as severe as a winter storm advisory and is expected to bring less than six inches of snow. Later Saturday morning and into the evening, northwestern Iowa is expected to see two to five inches of snow.

“Travel will be hazardous,” Jensen said. “It will be the first accumulating of snow in that area, so people just need to be prepared and get used to driving in winter conditions again.”

Lee said temperatures in the Des Moines area will not be low enough for freezing rain.

“It’s not the right atmosphere for it,” Lee said. “It will be a miserable cold and wet day (in Des Moines area).”

Saturday high temperatures are expected to be 39 degrees with a low of 25.

The state of Iowa did not see much snow Thursday night and Friday morning. At the Des Moines International Airport it was measured at a half an inch.

Lee said at the weather service office in Johnston there was just a trace and that there was no reported snowfall higher than half an inch throughout the state.

Cities prepared their streets for winter conditions Thursday afternoon.

Des Moines Public Works Director Bill Stowe said drivers have benefited from efforts the city began before snow started to fall.

Stowe said right before it snowed, the Public Works Department put down liquid sodium chloride on streets and followed up with rock salt at night.

“That will act as a buffer as we go into tomorrow,” he said. “Our view is we have a good first step.”

Stowe said he thinks Des Moines streets are in good shape, but he’ll be watching carefully as the storm rolls in Saturday with rain and snow.

Be Safe This Holiday Season: Prevent Drunk and Drugged Driving

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 5
–>

During a holiday season, many find their schedules filled with selling and celebrations with co-workers, friends, and family; and this means some-more transport by car. Because of this augmenting transport and bent for adult celebrations to embody a expenditure of alcohol, National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month is celebrated in December.

Most of us are informed with debate slogans to forestall celebration and pushing (“Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk,” “Over a Limit, Under Arrest,” “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”), though not everybody is wakeful of a dangers unperceiving pushing poses on a roadways. More and some-more Americans are prescribed drugs each day and an augmenting series of those authorised drugs can impact one’s ability to safely work a engine vehicle.

Consuming ethanol while holding drugs usually increases these dangers.

According to a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), “Mixing ethanol and medicines can be harmful. Alcohol, like some medicines, can make we sleepy, drowsy, or lightheaded. Drinking ethanol while holding medicines can feature these effects. You might have difficulty concentrating or behaving automatic skills. Small amounts of ethanol can make it dangerous to drive, and when we brew ethanol with certain medicines we put yourself during even larger risk. Combining ethanol with some medicines can lead to falls and critical injuries, generally among comparison people.”

And, it’s not only pain killers or prescriptions that can be dangerous when churned with alcohol. Even herbal remedies and over-the opposite drugs can have damaging effects when total with alcohol. In fact, NIAAA’s “Harmful Interactions: Mixing Alcohol With Medicines” announcement lists risks for a far-reaching accumulation of medications, including those for allergies, cold and flu; angina and heart disease; stress and epilepsy; arthritis, blood clots, cough, depression, diabetes, lengthened prostate; heartburn, indigestion, green stomach; high blood pressure, high cholesterol, infections, flesh pain, revulsion and suit sickness; pain, seizures, and nap problems.

Think Extreme for Golf’s Winter Break: Fan Take

As many golfers in the United States, winter is a time to practice indoor putting and hit the virtual simulators. Unless you live in warm climates, sports are seasonal for a lot of people as winter marks basketball and ice hockey rather than hitting the links or swinging a baseball bat.

When you’re stuck inside on a putting mat, consider some extreme golf holes for your daydreaming pleasure when the snow flies outside your window.

Coeur D’Alene Resort

Idaho is known for its rugged beauty and potatoes. However, one hidden gem is the Coeur D’Alene Resort Golf Course. The 14th green is perhaps one of the most challenging in the world. It’s so hard you can only get there by boat. Because it’s a colder climate, the course opens April 1 every year and stays open for about six months.

The green is unique in that it floats. Every day, the computer alters the distance from tee to pin from 95 to 200 yards. All you have is a tee box and then 15,000 square feet to land on in the middle of a lake. You may have to spend money on a bucket of balls for just one hole.

Extreme 19th

Hanglip Mountain in South Africa is a prominent landmark near Legend Golf and Safari Resort. Guests can play a round of 19 holes and tour some of Africa’s greatest specimens of wildlife. Yes, I said 19 holes. The 19th tee sits a quarter of a mile above the green atop Hanglip Mountain as golfers try to land their ball on a green the shape of Africa.

The challenge is even greater as the ball accelerates faster from high above and not just from arching into the air from a normal golf swing. Luckily, there are some short fairways around the green so your target is a little bigger. The tee is only accessible by helicopter and is touted as the longest par three hole in the world.

According to the site’s leaderboard, no one has aced the hole and only four golfers have shot a two. Only 49 participants have made par. Actor Morgan Freeman was one of the lucky ones—he made par.

Green Zone Golf

Nothing beats international golf. In Lappis, Finland, you can play the Green Zone Golf Club that is unique for two reasons. First is that the back nine and front nine are in two different countries. You start in one country and cross the Tornio River to go to the other. Second is that during the summer months you can play at any time. The sun never sets due to the inclination of the earth to the sun. At only 6,422 yards, the 18 holes are relatively short. Don’t look for the European Tour to come here anytime soon.

WASHINGTON — The proclamation this week that American Airlines would record for bankruptcy, creation it a final of a vital carriers to take that step, stirred a mini-wave of nostalgia among those who remember a heyday of atmosphere transport when passengers indeed got dressed adult to house a plane. Nowadays, streamer to a airfield means wearing simply removable boots and make-up a lunch meaningful that even a peanuts have mostly left by a wayside.

Airline transport has been dramatically transformed, and not always for a better. On a upside, some-more people are drifting currently than ever before, and a industry’s reserve record is a best in a world. The downside has some-more to do with nuisance than safety, and that’s a good thing. But everybody has their aeroplane fear stories, so we won’t relate them here.

We will indicate out that this is an attention roughly unfailing to destroy in a clarity that particular carriers like American roughly never are profitable, during slightest not for long, and when they cut back, it’s a roving open that feels a pinch. American will not disappear a approach other bequest brands have, namely TWA, Braniff, Eastern Airlines, and Pan Am. American’s new CEO positive business that all tickets would be respected and frequent-flyer miles over as a airline goes by a Chapter 11 failure filing.

The expected outcome is a most smaller conduit that sheds probably all amenities and resembles one of a many bonus airlines now crowding a skies.

For those who skip a amenities, or are too immature to have gifted them, there is a ABC radio drama, PAN AM, that is set in 1962 and recreates a glorious days compared with that epoch of craft travel. That was before deregulation done a attention competitive, bringing down prices and creation atmosphere transport some-more permitted to a ubiquitous public.

The TV array portrays Pan Am stewardesses in their heading blue uniforms, and papers a fights they waged opposite weight mandate and “girdle checks” to defend a mandated physique picture perpetrated by management. The show’s destiny is a bit iffy formed on haphazard ratings, though examination an part or dual is to comprehend that nostalgia has a limits, and change is not usually unavoidable though desirable.

Southwest Airlines pioneered a new bonus business indication that now has many imitators. Its tip was to consider of itself as a Greyhound train of a skies or, as a open might consider of it, as a cattle automobile of a skies — container in a passengers, provide everybody flattering most a same, and have a good time doing it. Southwest’s moody attendants are speedy to let their personalities show, and a best come opposite like stand-up comics who usually occur to be operative for an airline.

This is an attention in hunt of a winning business model. Delta, United, USAir, Continental and Northwest have all been by a wringer. Now it’s American’s turn. The practice right now is barebones travel, and afterwards assign for all that passengers used to take for granted, a indication taken to extremes by Europe’s Irish-based Ryanair — an impassioned that might turn universal.

Still, it’s a injured industry, warrant to rising fuel prices and heightened confidence concerns. It’s also an positively essential industry. In a 11 days after a 9/11 attacks when Reagan National airfield was close down, a republic got a glance of what it would meant for a economy should atmosphere transport grub to a halt.

American is following a frequented trail in seeking failure insurance as it reconfigures itself to contest in a universe of bonus carriers. The good news is it will survive; though a unwelcome existence is that a knowledge of transport on a final of a bequest carriers can usually be gifted vicariously by examination a TV show.

Conqs free throw woes cost them in rematch with Labette

Dodge City went into halftime up nine and had to have been feeling pretty confident. They were the winners of six straight, had a polished-looking 10-1 record and had fresh memories of a Thanksgiving weekend defeat of Labette by five.
However, the second half would take an unkind and ugly turn for the worst.
Labette would outscore the Conqs 53-33 in the second stanza to hand Dodge just their second loss of the season.
The Conqs shot considerably better than the home Cardinals, taking 11 less shots and making only one less basket. One area that cost Dodge dearly would be their shooting from the charity stripe, going 22 of 33 from the free throw line.
Despite the loss, the Conqs got standout efforts from Tramel White, Tyshon Pickett, Clarenece Willard and Greg Lee. They were once again without scoring threat R.J. McGhee.
White led all Dodge City scorers, pouring in 22 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out five assists. He was 10 for 12 from the free throw line and shot just under 50% from the field.
Pickett was the other Conq to hit the 20 point plateau, scoring that mark exactly after going 7 of 16. He added another double-double to his resume, polishing the glass for 10 rebounds and led the team with two blocked shots.
As for Willard, he was able to put in 18 points of his own, tying White for the team lead with five assists and led the team in steals with three.
Perhaps the surprise of the evening came from Greg Lee. The 5-foot-10 freshman from Jackson, Miss., had not seen much playing time this season, but came alive against Labette, sinking four three-point shots to account for his 12 points.
The Nov. 23 battle between these two squads at the Civic Center saw a contest with 71 total fouls and 86 free throw attempts. This one was a little more subdued, but still featured 49 fouls and 69 free throw shots.
Dodge will look to bounce back from their loss to Labette as they travel to Liberal this weekend to compete in the Pizza Hut Classic.
On Dec. 9, they will take on Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa and on Dec. 10 they will battle with Quakerdale Prep before taking time off for the winter break. Both contests are scheduled for a 4 p.m. tipoff time.
