Dodge County man arrested for 8th OWI

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 2
–>

RUBICON — A traffic stop in Dodge County has resulted in the arrest of an Iron Ridge man for his eighth offense of drunken driving.

At 9:48 p.m. Nov. 29, Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mike Willmann saw a vehicle moving slowly in the Oasis Bar parking lot in Rubicon, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. Willmann ran the license plate and discovered it was registered to a man who has at least six prior drunken driving arrests.

The officer saw the driver cross the centerline and nearly travel into a ditch while making a right hand turn, according to the report. Willmann stopped the car and through field sobriety tests determined the driver was intoxicated.

A preliminary breath test indicated the 59-year-old man was nearly three times the normal legal limit. Since this drunken driving arrest would be the man’s eighth offense, his alcohol level was more than 10 times the legal limit for some one with that many prior offenses, according to the report.

The man is being held in the Dodge County Jail on charges of drunken driving, eighth offense, open intoxicants in vehicle and violation of probation.

If convicted of the charges, he could serve up to 10 years in prison and be fined $25,000.

Doggie on board

Last week we beheld something really opposite about holiday travelers. Many of a passengers roving “over a stream and by a woods” were of a four-legged variety. Yes, it seems that some-more and some-more people are opting to take their pets along on vacations and brief getaways. As an disciple for including your dog in as many family and amicable activities as we can, this creates me happy. However, we can severely raise your pet’s transport knowledge if we ready him or her for a outing good beforehand.

Like anything new, your pet should be given time to acclimate to extended automobile travel. Being trapped in a automobile with a ill pet is miserable for both a pet and humans! So, if your pet’s usually automobile float is to his yearly veterinarian appointment, start holding him on brief errands around city good before your trip. This will assistance him get used to a feeling of roving in a automobile and diminution a chances he will get carsick.

A 2010 consult by AAA found that one in 5 dog owners acknowledge pushing with a dog on their laps, and it is estimated that over 98 percent of dogs float in cars unrestrained. Even yet we might consider a pet is happier roaming giveaway in a car, a fact is, an wantonness pet is during risk for critical damage in a eventuality of an remarkable stop or remarkable accident. And not usually is a pet during risk for injury, though a humans roving with him as well. An wantonness 10-pound dog in a pile-up during 50 miles per hour will strive roughly 500 pounds of vigour on contact. An 80-pound dog in a pile-up during only 30 miles per hour now becomes a 2,400 bruise mass drifting by a air. If we wish to safeguard a reserve of both your pet and everybody else in a car, always secure your dog in a crate, or connected to a seatbelt or automobile harness. And never expostulate with your dog on your lap, only as we wouldn’t expostulate with a child on your lap.

Make your pet as gentle as possible. Leather and vinyl automobile seats can get prohibited and gummy during prolonged automobile rides. Cover a seats with a gentle material, preferably something that will purify simply in box your pet does get ill or has a potty accident.

Plan for visit stops and breaks. Pets do most improved on trips when we can stop each few hours and let them widen their legs. Make certain we have a secure leash, collar or harness, and your pet is wearing identification.

Bring a supply of your pet’s food and H2O from home. Even a smallest dietary change can means a bit of gastrointestinal upset, and that’s a final thing we wish to occur while on a prolonged automobile ride.

Some other critical transport necessities to include:

A pet initial assist kit

Cleaning supplies

Plastic gloves

Extra leashes and collars

Blankets and towels

Your pet’s immunization and medical record

While holding your pet with we on your subsequent vacation or getaway might sound like a bit of a hassle, only consider about a rewards that will come from carrying your best crony along. You won’t have to worry about him or her while you’re left and we won’t have to spend time revelation him all about your outing when we return!

Farm-to-Table, Vine-to-Glass: Micato Safaris Introduces a Food & Wine Lovers’ Tour of South Africa

Micato Takes Travellers’ Taste Buds on Safari with their New “Farm-to-Table, Vine-to-Glass” Food Wine Lovers’ Tour of South Africa

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 22, 2011

When George Bernard Shaw said that “there is no love sincerer than the love of food,” he could have easily been describing the age-old passion South Africans harbor for their food and drink. Since its early days provisioning ships for the arduous voyage from Europe to Asia during the heyday of the spice trade, South African capital Cape Town has been at the cutting edge of culinary creativity, which is why the city known as the “Tavern of the South” sits at the hub of Micato’s new Farm-to-Table, Vine-to-Glass tour.

South African cuisine bears influences from a hodgepodge of cultures, including African, Malaysian, French and Dutch. Bearing this in mind, Micato has lovingly crafted this food and wine pilgrimage to combine high cuisine and winemaking at some of South Africa’s most celebrated restaurants, hotels and safari lodges with opportunities to experience more humble local fare at private homes and from the food stalls that line the streets of this flavourful nation.

Some broad strokes of this dynamic 8-day journey:

Day 1— Arrive for the first of three nights at the uber-luxurious OneOnly Cape Town on the Victoria Alfred Waterfront, boasting the award-winning Nobu – the first in Africa –and Reuben’s. This evening, enjoy a five-course food and wine pairing at Reuben’s, the eponymous restaurant of South African Celebrity Chef Reuben Riffel. Even the names of Reuben’s masterful, locally-inspired dishes are enough to make your mouth water: peppered springbok steak with balsamic braised cabbage, roasted pear, turnips and parsnips or Saldana Bay mussels steamed with lemongrass, coconut and seamed chili. This is indeed a fitting start to this culinary adventure.

And if you’d like a nightcap, OneOnly Cape Town has one of the most balanced and diverse wine collections on the continent with over 5,000 bottles, 80 available by the glass. Oenophiles will delight in prestigious vintages, and discover up-and-coming South African boutique wines selected by Luvo Ntezo, Head Sommlier, internationally recognized as the Best Young Sommelier in South Africa

Day 2— Begin the day with a visit to the historic fishing village of Kalk Bay en route to the spectacular cliffs of the Cape of Good Hope, where the Dutch East India Company ships made their way along the spice trade route to Asia. Stop by picturesque Noordhoek village for farm-to-table fare at Chef Franck Dangereux’s The Foodbarn, where such luminaries as Leonardo DiCaprio and Oprah Winfrey have also dined.

Dinner is at one of the most critically acclaimed restaurants in Cape Town—The Test Kitchen, presided over by Chef Luke Dale-Roberts. The menu is constantly changing at this experimental restaurant located in the Old Biscuit Mill, based on what is in season, but you can be sure it will be fresh and sensational. Starters such as foie gras, Jersualem artichoke and even a lemon chicken tree with rosemary streusel leaves make a fine introduction to mains such as the renowned pan-seared lamb fillets, served with beetroot and Jägermeister jus, braised fennel, sweetbreads, and macadamia and cauliflower stuffing.

Day 3—This morning, visit a beacon of hope, Rosie’s Kitchen in Khayelitsha Township. Rosie’s kitchen trains unskilled men and women to earn a living in food service, and offers nutritional and affordable lunches to the local community from its proprietary gardens.

Continuing the day’s focus on the daily fare of the locals, this evening you’ll experience dinner at the private residence of a prominent Cape Town family, friends of Micato founders Jane Felix Pinto. Here you’ll be treated to a home-cooked meal of South African specialties, including bobotie (spiced mincemeat with an egg-based topping), bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry) and malva pudding, a sweet dish of Afrikaner origin.

Day 4—Today you’ll drive through the breathtaking Cape Winelands to the quaint village of Franschhoek. Here, at Le Quartier Français, Chef Margot Janse heads up The Common Room, where small plates yield such mouth-watering delights as fish pops with chakalaka ketchup, springbok bitterballen with apple mustard and lamb frikadelletjies with flatkoek and raïta. These savouries are expertly paired with wines from the nearby Môreson estate.

This afternoon, drive to idyllic Babylonstoren to stay in a garden-side private villa. Spanning eight acres, the Babylonstoren garden contains over 300 varieties of edibles. Guests can create their own meals (and enjoy a cooking lesson from the chef) choosing from an abundance of green, yellow and red vegetables, fruit, herbs and salad leaves. After choosing their favorites from the garden, guests can enjoy what they’ve picked with cheeses and sliced locally cured hams, as well as a selection of poultry, beef, lamb, fish and venison dishes. The meals are further enhanced by a choice of garden salads, potatoes of every hue, pulses and home-baked farm bread.

Day 5—After a delightful al fresco breakfast at Babylonstoren, drive to Stellenbosch to enjoy a wine and chocolate pairing at Waterford Estate, hosted by cellar master Kevin Arnold. Then it’s on to an organic country table lunch of fresh fishcakes, vegetable terrine, and homemade sorbet at Makaron, Majeka House, Stellenbosch.

This evening offers spectacular wine tasting at Delaire Graff Estate, followed by dinner on the terrace of the Delaire Graff Restaurant, enjoying breathtaking sunset views of the Stellenbosch valley and mountains below. Such signature dishes as pickled beetroot carpaccio with goat cheese fritters, crayfish lasagna with king oyster mushrooms, and pistachio nougat served with rose geranium ice cream—all perfectly paired with Delaire wines—will delight the palate.

Days 6, 7 8—A safari to savour! For the next three nights, guests will enjoy exquisite accommodations in the bush at Royal Malewane on a concession adjacent to Kruger National Park, perfectly situated for abundant game viewing.

Guests spend the days tracking everything from cheetahs to elephants, and their nights learning cooking skills from the great Chef John Jackson, also the General Manager, who is responsible for the lodge being the first to boast a Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Blazon distinction for cuisine. The grand finale: a sumptuous, Bedouin-style candlelight dinner in the bush!

Micato Safaris‘ Farm-to-Table, Vine-to-Glass tour is priced at $13,775 per person, based on double occupancy. (Rate excludes international airfare.) For more information, visit http://www.micato.com or call 1-800-MICATO-1.

High Winds Creating Difficult Travel in the Plains

A large difference in air pressure over the Plains will produce high winds from Texas to the Canadian border into tonight.

Wind gusts have approached 60 mph this morning from Rapid City, S.D., to McCook, Neb., to Russell, Kan.

This trend will continue this afternoon and evening before the winds calm down during the overnight hours.

With many vehicles on the roadways heading home after Thanksgiving travel, there is concern that such large-scale winds could wreak havoc on the roads.

The cause for the high winds is a tight difference in air pressure between high pressure over the Great Basin and low pressure moving into the Great Lakes.

This difference in air pressure creates a zone of very strong winds which happens to lie over the Plains states at the present time.

Sustained winds will average 25-40 mph this afternoon and evening from North Dakota through central and western Texas.

Frequent wind gusts to between 50 and 60 mph will be the rule across cities such as Bismarck, Dodge City and Amarillo.

Wind gusts to that magnitude can down tree branches and power lines.

Be sure to secure any loose outdoor furniture as it can be tossed around very easily in high winds.

High-profile vehicles, such as tractor trailers and buses, should remain cautious when traveling through the Plains this afternoon and evening. Wind gusts to these magnitudes can easily knock over these types of vehicles.

Luckily, these strong winds won’t last all that long. As the aforementioned high pressure system moves into the Plains tonight and Sunday, the overall magnitude of the winds will relax significantly.

Another bout of high winds over the Plains is possible later next week as a very cold air mass works its way southward through the central part of the country. More details on that in the upcoming days!

Thanksgiving in the wild

So this year the Suttons decided to flee the distractions of sports and extended family to celebrate Thanksgiving under gray clouds at Safari West wildlife preserve outside Santa Rosa.

“We’ve never done anything else but the traditional Thanksgiving and we thought we’d try something new,” his wife Heather Sutton said.

The soggy weather Thursday did little to discourage visitors from cramming the preserve’s parking lot to attend tours and a pair of Thanksgiving dinners that sold out weeks ago. The park’s evolution as a magnet for Thanksgiving guests surprises even some who work there.

“It kind of blows my mind, too,” tour guide Danny Cusimano said.

Apparently it fits a need for alternatives to the traditional holiday for folks looking to dodge doing the dishes while trying something new.

Nevin and Tess Heintze, Australian ex-patriates who live in Sunnyvale with their two young kids, said they’ve never really adopted the American holiday. For Australians, Turkey Day is Christmas, they said.

Instead, they like to take advantage of Thanksgiving’s empty roads and attractions to plan adventures like their trip to Yosemite two years ago. They’d never seen the park so sparely attended.

“We actually have no traditions other than doing odd things,” Nevin Heintze said.

They toured Safari West Thursday morning sitting on their jeep’s roof as they rounded the acres of animals from the African Serengeti, though temperatures were a tad lower on the Sonoma savannah.

“I’m still thawing out,” Nevin Heintze said.

Then they gathered for traditional American Thanksgiving dinner where the African offering were limited to Tusker beer and Sebeka wine.

Jim and Janice Kissee, recent retirees from the Central Valley, said their grown kids were with their respective in-laws, leaving them with a chance to scope out future trips for the grandkids.

“It’s non-traditional” Jim Kissee said. “But there’s a lot nice people and good food.”

Update: Near-record temps expected for Midwest Thanksgiving

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 2
–>

Today’s clear skies and dry roads had Glenda Gudmonson pondering a pit stop on her trek to spend Thanksgiving in Fort Dodge.

The Kansas City woman is traveling with her 14-year-old son Cordell Collins, who has never visited the campus of his mother’s alma mater — Iowa State University.

“It’s perfect weather for it,” said Gudmonson, taking a break from her driver’s seat duties at an Interstate Highway 35 rest area just outside Ankeny. “Why not?”

Gudmonson and Collins were two of hundreds of holiday travelers on the roads today, and so far, conditions seem to stacked in their favor, said Brenda Brock, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Des Moines.

The only blip on an otherwise sunny forecast? Heavy snow and rain forecast in Washington state and Western Montana.

But those staying closer to home are in for a treat.

“Thanksgiving Day (in Iowa) looks really great,” Brock said. “There’s a bridge of high pressure that’s moving into the area, and that’s going to give us clear, sunny skies.”

The Midwest is also poised to experience near-record highs on Turkey Day. Temps in Des Moines are expected to range from 55 to 65 degrees.

A cold front should arrive in Iowa late Friday or early Saturday bringing with it light rain, but the drizzle shouldn’t create any road hazards, Brock said.

Air travelers are also in luck this year, said Roy Criss, manager of public affairs.
The Des Moines International Airport is busier than normal today, but there have been few flight delays, he said.

“We’re not to the point where it overwhelms the facility,” said Criss, who predicted terminal traffic would remain heavy through 5 p.m.

For those still headed to the airport this afternoon, he offered the following tips:

1) Check the status of your flight early and often at http://www.dsmairport.com
2) Arrive at least 90 minutes before your scheduled flight time
3) Visit the Transportation Security Administration at http://www.tsa.gov to make sure you’re following carry-on rules

“And, pack your patience,” Criss added. “It’s still a busy day to travel.”

Road warriors Gudmonson and her teenager Collins said highway traffic picked up around the Des Moines metro area this afternoon, but both mother and son said they’re keeping their eye on the prize.

“Family,” said Gudmonson.

“Food,” the teen countered.

Kirby: Trains contra people always a lethal proposition

A century ago, Utah was during a rise of a tyrannise history. Much of what a state consumed arrived over a iron highway and into a burden yards of Ogden and Salt Lake City.

Before there were automobiles, many urbanites commuted on transport cars. And until atmosphere transport became competitive, trains were a usually approach to pierce people prolonged distances in relations comfort.

Rail transport is entrance back. Not usually are transport cars plying a roads in Salt Lake City, nonetheless people are also articulate about a probability of a high-speed rail tie to Las Vegas.

Recent TRAX fatalities competence advise Utah isn’t prepared for a lapse to a rails. When TRAX plows into a automobile or a pedestrian, it’s a large news story. It suggests a miss of due courtesy for a open that hasn’t utterly acclimated to fast-moving trains in their midst. Not so.

Even nonetheless Utahns were some-more informed with rail transport a century ago, it’s startling how many were killed by trains and transport cars. Back then, distractions such as iPods, rush hour, pushing with a windows adult and shrill song hadn’t been invented yet.

Yet there were dozens of ways to die by sight in Utah in 1900. People fell defunct on a tracks, wandered onto them though profitable attention, attempted to join a float on a flitting burden or simply stood there.

You didn’t even indeed have to be on a marks to get killed. Sticking their heads out a windows and removing them whacked off by flitting telegram poles did a series of Utahns in. Try that on TRAX.

Even if we obeyed a law, there was no pledge we were safe. Horses pulling your car competence shaft from an approaching burden and indeed drag we adult onto a tracks.

Getting run over by a sight a century ago occurred with such magnitude that news reports were reduced to single, colorful paragraphs, such as this one from a journal Carbon County on Mar 4, 1910: “Atonio Yaconenti, a laborer for a Denver Rio Grande tyrannise during Colton, was run over and now killed by a burden train.”

That’s it, zero more. Like we said, genocide by sight wasn’t accurately large news. And since a Internet hadn’t been invented yet, bloody explanation was a range of tangible newspapers.

American Eagle, Aug. 17, 1901 • “L. Huber of Salt Lake City met his genocide by descending from a relocating sight nearby Lehi, all limbs being severed from a case and a conduct carried during slightest 150 feet from a deformed mass. He was roving on a stop lamp when a collision occurred.”

Carbon County, May 27, 1909 • “Gust Johnson, a Swedish laborer, was killed by a newcomer sight during Lakeside, his physique being literally belligerent to pieces.”

Those are a sorts of stories we competence not wish created about your desired one, nonetheless amicable attraction hadn’t been invented yet. Neither had secular sensitivity.

In further to travel, a sight was once a available process of suicide.
